Damn, but I could do with some help.
Christmas week is the target.
I've skied a bit in Espace Killy from Tignes and Three Valleys from La Tania. Been down to La Daille and did a few runs in Val Thoren on a big ski out day once.
Have stayed in Belle Plagne and skied a fair bit of LP and LA.
Never been to Avoriaz or P du S.
To be honest, I'm happy pretty much anywhere. However....the SO, whilst very competent on a good day, can lose it completely on a bad day (as some reading this will know). So, my question, which resort offers some of the best, wide, cruisey, linked (or closely linked) slopes that allow the maximum feeling of "travel".
I appreciate this is probably a tricky question. For example V d I, with the Espace Killy, has plenty of reasonably accessible blues (IIRC) and a download by gondola at the days end would be fine. I'm sure the place would be great at Christmas too.
Val Thoren offers some good ski in/out options and is high, so at a relatively early stage of the season, should be a reasonably good bet for cover. Same with Belle Plagne for coverage.
I guess what I am asking is that if you had a partner who was prone to really losing it, which options are likeliest to offer the least problems. Am leaning towards V d I because of the town's size, though the higher resorts appeal for the snow-sure aspect.

Chasseur, It's dead in La Plagne until New Years Eve, you would be bored, Val T well, that's just the place....

Stop messing about go to Whistler and put them in Ski Esprit where they will have a great time and you can go explore. If you ski together - off all of the lifts there is always a green way down too so you can always meet at the bottom if you want to to a black or trees you still feel as though you have been on the same mountain.

Val T has got some nice long rolling reds....but Val dI is my fave resort in the world so I would always recommend it - really nice village, prob nice place to be at Christmas. As you have pointed out - gondola down at the end of the day is always an option. Even gondola straight from Folie.....plenty of blues - and if the snow is good, you get some tree runs.

Ski Esprit is guided group skiing all day sessions with a little teaching help thrown in. Great for building confidence and many in the groups are there just for the confidence boost having been pushed too hard by other halfs into going harder/faster/steeper. Groups are organised in capability so never need to be worried about being slowest or fastest. If you are in the wrong group they move you. It really is good. 3 days min 5 days max, weekends off to ski with the rest of the group they have gone with.
We have done it for 4 years and my cousin goes every year for 2 weeks and is still in the same upper3 class she was on the first trip. But she is happy there and meets many people same as her. There is little pressure to go on up if you do not want to. Which leaves husband and daughter to go double black diamond all day if they want.

Avoid the rain go to Val d' Snow sure, nice resort, not many Russ...bigger OP than BP, Val T can be V cold and stormed out in December/Jan

Chasseur, Val T sounds like potential for a very bad day IMHO, no tree skiing if the weather closes in for your SO...La Plagne would be a good choice IMHO or have you considered Courchevel at all?

Cynic, kitenski, good points, thanks. We did 3-Vs a few years ago and, whilst there were some positive experiences, probably looking elsewhere. pam w has given some really helpful insight into Les Saisies, so looking into that at the moment. Samoens has also been suggested by someone.

OK, as an update and seeking additional info...
As the cost begins to prohibit some places, further searching came up with Kirchberg, which looks, from the piste map of the area, to have plenty of blue run options. Oh, and I get to ski over towards Kitzbuhel and the Hanekam...

Kirchberg would be good. As well as Kitzbuhel, you can also easily get over to the Westendorf slopes by ski bus to the Ki-West lift and then on to the Ski Welt area - lots of travel and lots of nice blue/reds.
Morzine also very good for lots of travel and lots of blues/reds.

Chasseur, having been to the 3Vs and espace killy, i'd say the 3Vs for your scenario. My oh is the same (can very quickly go from skiing fine to feeling quite intimidated by the whole thing. The more gentle skiing is just more accessible in the 3Vs imo.

There should be snow in Megeve (St Gervais is a cheaper option). Both are real towns, uplift to slopes, ski back down if snow is good. Flattering blues and reds, smart (expensive) restaurants on the hill. Lots of off piste between the pistes.
On the other hand, PdS has vast blues and reds, and you can choose between ski-in, ski-out or village atmosphere. Depending on your choice of village, you might have to take the lift down that time of year,
