Morzine area

A snowHead

Anyone here been boarding in the morzine/les gets area in France?

Small party going in the week leading up to Xmas so was just wondering what perhaps to expect or maybe some recommendations on anything from pubs to tips on best parts of the area in general.

I went to Les Gets a few years back with the other half in March - loved it, great resort. It was our third trip so we were verging on intermediate and it suited us down to the ground.

A bit sleepier than Morzine but has a nice town feel with a bit of french 'authenticity'. Some nice pubs and great eateries (L'op Traken next to the ice rink was excellent).

The ski area is really good - lots of cruisey blues that are great for those starting out, plus some gentle nursery slopes at the bottom of the hill. Some wooded areas that will give a bit of cover of the weather closes in but some fantastic views up top. The lifts are fast and plentiful plus the links to Morzine are seamless and it's easy enough to get into the rest of the PDS if you go for the full area ticket. Plus, Les Gets has the awesome Mont Chery area, which has brilliant off-piste and when it dumps is a true playground. It's grass underneath the snow so is a fairly safe terrain if you venture off the pistes.

It's a quick transfer from geneva - about an hour if I remember rightly. It's a low resort (as is Morzine) so it's worth keeping an eye on snow levels via the webcams.

Are you staying in LG or Morz?
Beginner/ intermediates this side of Morzine (Pleney if i recall correctly) will be excellent for you. Over to the Avoriaz/Swiss side is more extreme but you can pick and chose your runs, nothing too bad but certainly LG side is better suited.
Great village (Morzine), big with plenty to look at as well as ski. Good food and bars in the centre.
Put your accommodation up and there will be plenty of people along who will give you more specific info.

JezzahM, welcome to SnowHeads - we are all hoping for a good start to the season!
At the moment Les Gets is not scheduled to open the lifts till 22 December which is what is usually said - the lifts may open the weekends before that if the snow is good - from recollection Morzine has managed to open a bit before Les Gets. Very likely that Mt Chery will not open till 22nd in any case. We are going to be in Les Gets from around the 10th and will be driving to Ardent probably to ski Avoriaz as and when.
You will probably find that Les Gets opens up in a slow and gentle way in the village running up to Christmas - meaning that a lot of the shops and restaurants looked closed up and there will suddenly be a wild burst of activity and the sleepy hollow wakes up.
What are your dates and where are you staying?
