When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Felicity Aston in Antarctica [Reuters]
The British adventurer, Felicity Aston, became the first woman to ski alone across Antarctica this week. It took her 59 days, during which she hauled two sledges around crevasses and over mountains into endless headwinds, past the South Pole and onward to the coastal ice shelf. I'd have sat under the shower and drunk the whole bottle. Amazing achievement. I saw a report of her trip earlier this evening and sent the link to my brother in law, who is doing a charity trip to the South Pole at the end of the year (ie polar summer).

Quite amazing, considering it was only 100 years ago that anybody made it to the pole, and with such difficulty and 2 year expedition to do so. (Am currently engrossed in Scott's Journals, a great Christmas present Happy)

This is a great effort. She should be really proud of herself. I wonder how she traveled so long.

Way to go. It doesn't just take power to do something like this. It also takes courage, and will power. And a woman being the one to do it first proves that women can do anything if they want.

tomb13, I would imagine she used tripod. I would definitely want photographs to show the grandchildren if I ever achieved something as incredible as that! Smile

I am biggest fan of Felicity as a woman. I would like to say Best of luck for her brighter future in Ski. And Congratulations to the 1st female to traverse Antarctica SOLO.
