Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Using military tactical goggles for skiing? (ESS Advancer V-12)

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Spec looks very promising - antifog ventilation/filtration switch, interchangeble lenses, shockproof etc.

Last year I used cheap goggles and they would constrantly fog Mad so looking for something more effective and not very expensive.
I can get ESS Advancer V-12 with 3 lenses for about £30 from army surplus store. Worth it?

Hmm ...using army surplus military goggles, that's a thought. I guess thermal imaging infra-red vision military goggles might be particularly useful for seeing further in foggy conditions or falling snow Madeye-Smiley

I use 'em, and their ICE glasses too.

Mrs A likes the Advancer too 'cos they fit her face well and don't pinch her nose. However, she can't change the lenses reliably so now carries two pairs - one smoke and one yellow.

The ventilation option is good but they can still fog if you work up a bit of a sweat and then stand still. It soon clears when you start skiing though.

The service from ESS is good too. They sent me some spares for free when I ended up buying a set with frames and lenses from slightly different versions. I paid less than £20 each for two pairs and ended up with enough bits to make three.

altis, thank you for reply. What about field of view? i.e. do they restrict your vision in any way?

I didn't remember any problems so I've just tried them on.

True stereo vision is limited to about 60 degrees of arc. Beyond that the nose-piece gets in the way of the 'other' eye. This isn't as bad as it sounds 'cos your nose probably restricts this to 90 degrees anyway. Peripheral vision must be almost 180 degrees with the vents shut. They're a bit more restrictive with the vents open - but only because there's a little 'pillar' in the way - and you can just see a bright, unsheilded strip down the edge.

They work well with a helmet too Wink

Lenses are a bit tricky to change - I prefer the glasses that Altis mentions - with the 3 lenses good in all lights

Be careful because they leave well defined panda eyes.

Just realised I already own the ICE glasses - never bothered looking at the manufacturer before! Doh! Still, glad I got the goggles as well as the 'sunglasses' version is highly recommended.
