Poster: A snowHead
|
Have a couple of chronic shoulder problems and an arthritic neck (only 53)
In recent years to protect shoulders I have worn a Swedish BMX bit of kit. This is basically netting linking back pad, chest pads and elbow and shoulder pads that are made out of hard plastic. This is good but is too much for my injuries. Don't need the elbow or back pads. Just looking for shoulder pads. My current BMX kit is like wearing a couple of extra layers; fine in very cold weather but a sweat box for most reasonable temperatures. Can't find anything on ski websites etc.
Any ideas appreciated

Mark1863, To avoid the issue you describe I fashioned some shoulder pads out of foam camping mat. Played around with a paper pattern and a well positioned cut so that when 'pulled together' they fit nicely over the shoulder. Held onto a merino base layer with velcro sown onto the base layer, other side stuck to pad.
Stays in place well. If you wanted more protection you could use a better foam/plastic.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

try the d3o website, i wear a demo set of their body armour, its a unique material that hardens on impact. Someone like scott uses it for protection. But if you look at the website youll see the products illustrated. I swear by it, light weight use it for skiing and hockey

I have a Fox body-armour jacket which I wear when off-roading. The back protector zips off and can be removed. The same can't be said for the elbow pads, but I'm sure careful unpicking of the stitching coule remove them or, failing that, simply cut the arms off below the shoulder and get a friendly seamstress to attach the elasticated hem there rather than at the cuff.

Event (cross country) riders use an attachable shoulder pad which you could sew to an underlayer.
