Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Spoke to direct travel insurance this pm over a query and then just to dot the i and t asked if one of my family members was covered for a sking trip on their own The reply was yes but please note the cover now is for a total of 17day sking during the policy term and no longer for as many ski holidays as you wish but with a duration no longer than 17 days! Was anyone else aware of this change?[/u]

I've just checked out our renewal, as we are not going to be back in France in April this year to ski, my cheapest option might still be to renew with Direct Travel, if I remove cancellation and personal belongings cover. Our other policy with our bank will cover us for any summer holidays we take, and for cancellation of any ski holidays, as it is actually only the off-piste without a guide that we don't have. I can start looking again before next winter.

Hells Bells, I'm paying as I go with Snowcard and like you removing elements. it was cheaper than Direct and still covers off piste as previously discussed. My bank also covers non-ski holidays

Our policy with Direct Travel ends tomorrow. We are not renewing as 17 days per year is not enough. We are doing an annual policy with Tokio Marine which will be about twice what we paid DT but will cover unlimited trips including skiing up 45 days per trip (not per year yes per trip!). That will be more than enough. Has to be arranged through a broker. Its the only policy I could find for the amount of skiing we want as we are both OAPs.

I called DT yesterday as our policy expires in the middle of our trip. They extended the cover for the remaining 8 days with a single trip policy for £35 for both of us. I did mention why we weren't renewing the annual policy, and she did say that several others had said the same thing.

I wish this could be an issue for me - I've never skied more than 9 days in a year, and never expect to unless I win the lottery Sad

Just a note for anyone with kids who race - non FIS racing was covered on our DT insurance last year but when I came to renew in Jan any type of racing was excluded. Had to switch to SSE insurance which is actually nowhere near as good as many other travel insurance companies cover but was the only realistic one that covered racing.

mogulski, ...I insured with Direct Travel for years (they had around 2000gbp off me in total) - I had one claim in that time (seriously delayed flight - 2 days - around 300 gbp for family of four) and this year began to renew by phone - woman said 'policy has changed' so I said 'what's your equivalent' she said 'this....' so I renewed on-line in December. I need around 40 days for each in the family and unguided offpiste. I was startled by the above 17 days limitation mentioned in this thread. I phoned, prevarication started and I said I had been mis-sold - and not a trivial matter - we had all skied without insurance at half-term unawares, since our 17 days were up. They listened to the tape, and the story changed - although I had to insist, I got 82gbp of 124gbp back. I could have argued for more, I think, but couldn't be ar***d. I got a replacement policy from Fogg - forty-two days total pa for 135gbp, which was good. I would recommend them. But I do not think Direct was the company it once was.

mogulski, As another Direct Travel refugee, I nearly shouted "Eureka" when I read your post about the Tokio Marine policy. I'm about to follow your example (through JLT Insurance brokerage) but thought I'd just check with you that you haven't discovered any snags in the small print of this policy. I've just been quoted £170 for the two of us, which, when compared with the other suggestions I've seen on this forum (Snowcard, etc.) seems almost too good to be true for an unlimited number of days skiing per year (my wife and I anticipate at least 10 weeks' skiing next season but feel we can cope with the 45 day limit for each trip). It sounds as if we may be in a similar position to you. Although we ski only in Europe and have the EHIC cards and are members of the Austrian Alpine Club, I've been feeling uncomfortable about the possible limitations in cover in the AAC policy (e.g. private medical bills, cancellation and curtailment); however this policy seems to be a way of securing comprehensive cover at a reasonable cost. I'd be interested in any further thoughts you may have had about it.

Now that the subject's been brought up, it's worth asking and I guess sticking to this thread. Next season I'm going to need about 140 days insurance covering offpiste without a guide, DogTag are site sponsors and they look great. Is there any insurance which specialises in people who require it for long periods like entire seasons rather than just a few weeks a year?

DannyB01, although Direct Travel are no longer suitable for an annual policy, it might be worth looking into the cost of a single trip if all of your 140 days are going to be done at once.

Lets say you are taking four 7 day trips making 28 days in total.
What is to stop you continuing with the Direct travel policy but keeping quiet about your days skied? How could they know if you have been skiing or not unless you tell them?
snow conditions
After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
After all it is free Go on u know u want to!
Corduroy, Not a good example, since there is a choice of insurers who would insure you for 28 days max in a year, possibly at a lower premium than Direct Travel - hardly worth risking a refused claim and/or a conviction under the Fraud Act (whatever the premium may in fact be!) Also these days Big Brother knows exactly how many days you've been skiing and how far and how many vertical meters each day...and, if you injure yourself badly enough, it would no doubt be worth their while to ask a few questions.

As valais2, has commented, Direct Travel is no longer the insurer it once was. In imposing the 17 days skiing maximum they made a business/policy decision, which must have alienated thousands of their skiing customers, but no doubt for what they perceived to be sound commercial reasons. I couldn't help but feel dismayed and aggrieved after insuring with them for decades and never having made a claim, and I told them so. Before anyone says so, I concede that this was no doubt completely illogical on my part; they're not in business to keep those of us, who have the time and inclination to take multiple skiing trips in a year, happy and insured at a low cost. However I didn't like the way they did it, and it's a little disturbing when one hears tales of mis-selling and people skiing in ignorance of the new maximum limit. Speaking personally, I've lost my confidence in them and probably wouldn't insure with them, even if the 17 day max was adequate for my purposes.

Hells Bells, redrunmarcus, thanks, I'll look into those options. Smile Still, from the sounds of it Direct Travel has become a sly, back-handed company and I don't think I'm going to consider them seriously even if they do offer a good price.

I was just about to buy my usual single trip policy from DT and they have changed their pricing structure so that now age is taken into account.

Last years cover for a week was £20 and now its over £40 for a 41 year old.

So now I'm older and poorer.

How would DT know if you have skied for more than 17 days? Provided that your single trip is less than 17 days I doubt they would be any the wiser. If I take 3 x 1 week trips, my paperwork would only show that period for my holiday. How would they know? Unless they have a Batphone direct to MI5...

I had a ridiculous price quoted for our next holiday by Direct Travel, in fact is was about 10 times tiffin,s premium. When this kind of change happens it often means that they have changed underwriters and after a bit of research found that they have changed from AXA to AIG. I have had a reasonable quote from Staysure has anybody used them?
