The train takes about 2.5 hours from Munich airport to Garmisch for the Zugspitz Arena, Innsbruck for Tyrol, Woergl for Ski Welt, or Salzburg for Ski Amade, giving you a huge choice. Pick your favourite resort from almost anywhere in northern Austria.

Hi Matt - there's a map that shows all the train lines in the Alps and how they connect with ski resorts - the SkiRail Map of the Alps.
http://rogerlascellesmaps.co.uk/SkiRail_Map_Main.aspx
The suggestions in the post above summarise the key options.
There are also some places on the train line between Munich and Innsbruck like Mittenwald (in Germany) and Seefeld in Austria.
Innsbruck is a great base too with tons of resorts within an hour's free transport, and it's a pretty cheap and easy train ride from Munich especially if there's a few of you.

The Austrian railways route planner page is really helpful, also to find your way from Munich airport - www.oebb.at/en .
Have you concidered a rental car (and renting skis locally at low prices)? That has been our preference for flexibility. Outside the worst weekend traffic it enables Kirchberg (Kitz) in perhaps 90 min, or SkiWelt (Söll), with day trips to Zillertal or Alpbachtal for example. Not much longer to SkiAmade areas as Alpendorf. Badgastein, Wagrain, Flachau, Schladming within short reach - and Autobahn A8 back to Munich. 'Ski around' often means more skiing and less heavy afterskiing, a matter of choice of course. But even when staying at only one resort a rental car gives you a good flexibility.

The plan so far. Fly with lufthansa to munich from manchester wed evening arrive 8 ish. price currently £110, waiting for the flights to come down to £49 before booking(hopefully) Four seasons transfer to kitzbuhel. Looking at a few b&bs for around 30euro pppn. would then fly back the sunday evening 9pm flight so get to ski thurs, fri sat and all day sunday too. Hope to do this for around 300 inc lift pass!!

mattiwilkin, Take a look at the flights from Liverpool to Salzburg. If you can fly easily from Manchester, then Liverpool should also be on your list. That would open up Saalbach for you as you wrote in your original post. I know a couple of snowHeads used Liverpool to Salzburg a few times last year. It would also give you quite a few options that may not be so expensive in terms of transfers. I know, for example Taxi Huber do return transfers to the Flachau area of the Ski amadé for 50 Euro a head (this seasons price). Schladming has a good reputation as a party town as well with lots of places on the slopes as well as down in the town.
OK, you do not get your skis transported for free, but the market is more competitive in terms of ticket prices and there is less chance of losing skiing time while parked on the autobahn between resort and airport. If none of you are using your own kit, then using someone like Sleezy or RyanAir with a carry on bag seems like a good idea doesn't it?

mattiwilkin, what's a 'Four seasons transfer' please? Are they a transfer company, and if so what are they charging from Munich to Kitzbuhel?

red 27, They are a Tirol based transfer company, just Google them for their web site. I see them trundling up and down the A8 to and from Munich all the time.

Not sure how long you are there for- the local pass is I think Skiwelt but you can upgrade to the wider pass which covers Kitzbuhel as well. Kitzbuhel is skiable from Westendorf (lift up to the top and ski down the back on a long blue run) with a short bus trip (minutes) and you can easily get across the whole Kitzbuhel resort and back in the day - be careful on return though as the lifts on the Westendorf side close fairly early but you can get bus from Kirchberg back to Westendorf (although it is a proper bus they did free skier transport when I was last there) or there are plenty of people carrier size taxis around.

countryman, All the lifts close at the normal time, 16.15, the Ki-West lift does not close any earlier than the others. It is up to you to ensure that you make it back in time to get up the Ki-West lift and then over to the lifts serving the top of the Choralpe if you want to ski back down. You need to factor in 2 more lifts to get back to a position where you can ski back to Westendorf; the Windauberg 4-seater chair and the Laubkogel drag. Alternatively you can ski down Blue piste 117b from Fleiding and get the Talkaser lift back to the top of the Choralpe pistes and take Red 110 back to the bottom of the Alpenrosenbahn or the longer Blue 111 which brings you back to the Choralmbahn.
