Well, I have tried in vain to find a thread that I am sure was on here for ages. Can someone cleverer than me point me in the direction if it still exists. I am taking a group in Feb and it includes several total beginners - want to give tham a "list of things to pack/buy"
Thanks in advance. Nice to be on here again, it means the season is upon us again (I tend to spend my time on other forums outside the season!)

Why bother? - surely Austria has plentiful supplies of Jägermeister?

Christopher, mp3 player is essential? A mobile phone would be far more useful.

Some of those blister type plasters - essential for beginners who will be hiring boots. Slap one on at the first hint of trouble.

snowball, The only solution would be to take the apres beer to the laundrette with you, then it is almost acceptable (but still wrong) to do washing on holiday.

I have enough underlayers now for a week - but it is more a matter of washing things through in the sink and leaving them to dry on the shower rail.

A cure for flu - this world important anouncement deserves much more prominance than being leaked to a skiing forum. I think Nature would devote a whole edition to it.

Wayne,
http://www.folgarida.co.uk/pages/folgarida_other_articles_equipment.html
An intersting list: it mentions taking ski poles with you but not skis; it has you taking trainers, sandals, and slippers but not a pair of shoes to actually walk around the resort in. It says taking night clothes is essential but toiletries and prescription medication is optional. It completely omits a debit or credit card. I think it is meant as a sutle joke and as such is quite funny.

Walking round the resort - trainers. Normally the best thing for the job.
Toiletries & Prescription medicines - it doesn't say ""optional", it says "you may want to take them". Which means that for some people, they are essentials. Most men won't really use any toiletries beyond those most hotels supply, and a lot of us aren't on any prescription medicines.
And I wouldn't expect it to mention a credit or debit card - surely nobody travels without their wallet/purse, and those will be in there.
I think it is a sensible list personally, apart from the fact that boots & poles (if you have them) should also have included skis - although since the list is aimed at beginners, they are unlikely to have any of the three.

The reason we didn't put skis on the list is that if you have em, you'll take em - but you may foget your poles and boots. If you don't have em you won't need em.
I always walk around ski resorts in trainers.
Toiletries are optional - take em if you want or use what's in the room when you arrive (or go to the supermarket and buy some stuff).
The other stuff does not say optional, it says "Others item you may want to take"
The gist of it is that if you know what to take you don't need a list.
Which is why is says "If you are an experienced skier then you already know what to take. If this is your 1st ski trip then you may use this list to ensure you have all the paraphernalia needed for your ski trip. "
Anyway, its just a list. If you have all the sutff on it, you'll be fine.

In terms of hygene to space ratio I reckon one pair of ski socks for every two days, rotated and the same for the base layer next to your skin and tshirt over that. More if you are going skinning and getting really smelly though.
Please don't just pack one tshirt and fleece - a guy on one of our trips STANK and it was so bad on the plane I had to hide my face in my boyfriends chest and breath there in the guise of being all lovey-dovey when I was actually trying to prevent myself from retching all over the disgusting non washing creature

I use to pack all bar the kitchen sink. During a 3 week trip to Tignes this year I got all in my stash rucksack, bootbag and skibag. This included full off piste kit, ipad, skis, boots. helmet, etc
Nearly the first thing I do when I get to resort is get some liquid detergent and a bottle of shower gel. This allows me to keep kit and myself clean.
Used 3 pairs of ski socks, 4 long sleeve tops, 4 t-shirts, 4 undies, 4 normal sock pairs and a fleece only as well as ski gear - thats it for 3 weeks. Soon as get in each day wash yourself and kit -it takes a few minutes to wash what you have worn. Ski socks I will often tread in the bottom of my shower and proper wash after 2 or 3 days of use.
Don't like stiff working boots in resort. Rubbish on ice. I go for waterproof trainers - in my experience the greater flexibility provides better grip.
So travel as light as possible and wash things is my advice!!

And ski jacket.
I was boarding the coach for a school ski trip one year when my mum asked where my jacket was, oops! Luckily we only lived about 5 mins drive away so mum could go home and get it for me.
