Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Nine doctors on an annual ski trip - Jan 2013

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
We are a group of nine doctors from Edinburgh that have an annual 4 night ski trip each January

We prefer to stay in a hotel on a HB basis and each of us likes our own room

In 2013, we hope to go to Austria ideally less than 2.5 hours drive from Munich

Can anyone recommend anywhere that will be willing to accommodate us please?

Plenty of choices.

The road between Munich and Innsbruck is about 102 miles needing 1:40h according to Google map. You will find on this road (in order the way you passing from the main road)

Ski Welt (8 resorts liked up together like Soll, Westendorf, Ellmau... good, nice, big, intermediate resort), Kitzbuhel (famous for skiing competition)
Zillertal Valley (6 to 7 unlinked resorts like Mayrhofen, Hintertux, Zillertal Arena...) which is full of variety.
Stubai Glacier and resorts around Innsbruck
Beyond Innsbruck Solden/Obergurgl is about 154 miles or 2:35h in the car.
St Anton/Lech/Zurs, Iscghl/Samnaun etc will be over 3 hours drive probably good for next time.

However instead of Innsbruck you can go to Zell Am See/ Kaprun & Saalbach/Hinterglemm is in the Salzburg direction at 112 miles away requiring 2:18h. These resorts require some minor roads.

Or you can stick to the motorway all the time to Flachau, 125 miles but 2:01h, which the about the mid point of Ski Amade with eye watering 870km piste, 275 lifts spread in 25 resorts (like Schladming, Bas Gastein Valley, Wagrain, Dachstein glacier..... a major skiing domain with huge variety of terrain)!

I suggest you have a look at the skiing resorts first, decide which one to stay, look at Google at the place, type "hotels" and select one to book. Austria is very affordable and has one of the highest standard. You will find the Austrian take pride in serving their clients so services and cleanliness are top notch. Austria is also the only skiing country made for skiers with cars as you will find the resort owners bending backward to make sure you can park as close to the lift station as possible and never charge parking fee. You will find they don't mind how many days you stay too as most locals do not stay for a full week.

Personally you can't go wrong with any of them.

If your group is mainly recreational skiers then Ski Welt, Saalbach/Hinterglemm/Leogang, Zillertal Valley or Zauchensee/Flachauwinkl of Ski Amade should be very enjoyable for everyone.

I myself normally book from hotels showed up in Google map or Expedia or Hotel.com or Bergfex.com. Since there are 9 of you so you could be in two cars and if needed stay in two adjacent hotels but 9 rooms in one place should not be a problem if you book early. Many hotels do HB and can offer ski pass within a package.

I mention ski Amade as this is one of the few ski pass that allow you ski any of the 25 resorts in the same region with just one pass that you can get from the hotel.

By law Austria require snow tyres on vehicles so all hired cars should have them. You are therefore reasonably well equipped to go to any of the resorts I mentioned. There are others smaller resorts too and you can check out their distances and position with Bergfex.com

For Munich I would advise you give plenty of time when catching a plane. The road from Munich Airport to Austrian border is very busy during certain hours in the winter. My brother in Norway used to fly to Munich when I went to pick them up and returned them back to the airport. He eventually found it safer to ski the last day and drove in the evening to stay near a Munich airport when the flight was early.

You're doctors, so presumably money isn't too much of a problem. Thus St Anton if you are good skiers/like offpiste, otherwise Ischgl.

About £1000 each all in

Van plus diesel usually works £100 each, same with ski pass and flights leaving about 700 for food and accommodation

Happy to spend more for right place

Easy access to slopes essential

Apres skiing very important too...

I used to play squash regularly with a group of dentists and medical doctors.

They are hard pressed to get a long holiday. Short breaks are easy and so they always try to get activities organised as a mean to escape the working pressure. Money is not normally a problem but time is precious for them. Normally these are not hard nuts on skiing or going for challenge or risk all the time. The OP started the thread staying it is only for 4 nights. Most of us would do one week or 6 nights. That is the difference.

Laughing I once had the "pleasure" of looking after a bunch of 'em in Chamonix. Individually they are incredibly bright but collectively they operate at an amoebic level of common sense. The surgeon in the group sometimes decided that "right" meant "left" and that has put me off operations ever since. Generally, I found that they ski at speeds way beyond their ability and it led to more than one major scare. Avoid.

So now that we all need to start listing occupations and where we live.....My group will comprise plumbers, pornstars and politicians next season, all from North East England, though we may also be joined by a lion tamer from Merseyside and a panel beater from East London.

Can anyone suggest a suitable resort Puzzled.......

talataziz, Ischgl, no question. Single rooms (actually twins at a nominal single occupancy supplement) are available in Hotel Alpenrose which is comfortable, clean and well situated a short walk from the main ski out. Stayed there with 3 mates in 2010 and had a great time.

If budget is tight don't drink in the hotel opposite (Madlein). If apres is high priority DO visit Nikki's Stadl down by the bridge. Dj Otzi is popular!.

£700 form food and accommodation? I wouldn't class that as a tight budget, when we go it's £400 all in, THAT'S a tight budget NehNeh

Dear All

I have followed this thread with great interest

I agree we ski too fast for our ability - we have had to leave members of our party in intensiv care units around europe - and nine alpha males trying to outdo each other is a certain recipe for disaster

After much debate, ease of access from Munich clinched it for Kitzbuhel

We have booked double rooms with single occupancy at the Schwartzer Adler in Kitzbuhel

Its a massive hike up from what we are used to and hope that there is some apres ski there as well as good snow

I hope at least someone can reassure us that it is an ok place to visit and would appreciate any thoughts of how we can make this trip the best ever

Talat

I never worked in Sheffield having spent much of my working life in Scotland

I met a group of 'Doctors' from Wales on a ski trip once. They seemed very keen on indicating their profession to the Ladeez. Not one of them knew what a Sphygmomanometer was. I think 'Trust me I'm a Doctor' was heard quite a bit in their apartment block.

Update - we got a great offer from Best Western Kitzbuhel and am now trying to convince our group to forego some of the luxury and go for the ski in ski out option that that hotel offers

it has a good tripadvisor rating

anyone got any experience of that hotel?

Unbelievable - sending the schwartzer adler the email from Best Western got us an even better offer BUT we do now have to lay down a 50% non-refundable deposit

that is a 20% reduction from the original price we were quoted

Best Western put their badge on a wide range of hotels of different standard, I stayed in a very ordinary (but cheap) Best Western which made me wonder how bad a Worst Western would be.
I Agree Austria normally sets a high standard in accomodation.
