When does it stop being 2011/2012 ski season and start being 2012/2013?
Is it when the lift close for the end of the winter?
Is it when the lifts close at the end of summer?
Is it when I have to stop using the 2011/2012 lift pass and start using the 2012/2013 one (some lifts run year round in Chamonix).
Is it the first snows of Autumn?
Or the first snow of Autumn/early winter that gets skied on?

1st October is the date I use for the beginning of the season, partly because that's the renewal date for my Carte Neige insurance. Had the final trip of 2011/12 last week, looking forward to the first trip of 2012/13 starting on 5 October.

The 2011/12 ski season ends when the lifts shut in April 2012.
The you get the "inter-season" before the "summer 2012" season, the another "inter season" and then when the lifts open the 2012/13 ski season starts.
Well that's how i've always viewed it.

(For the Northern Hemisphere) Probably around autumn I'd say as the new snowfall arrives and starts accumulating. Snowfall in summer I think of as the last echoes of last winter and snowfall in autumn as the first ripples ahead of next winter.

The 2011/12 season finishes when the lifts close at teh end of the season, normally around the end of April or start of May. Then there is the summer season of July and August when the lifts open for hiking and VTT and glacier skiing. When the lifts open at the start of the 2012/3 season (normally mid December but earlier in many resorts and later in others) then the 2012/3 season has started.

You know it makes sense.

I can only answer this from a recruitment point of view..
Normally chalets start posting their ski jobs at the end of November, because they have guests turning up around this time to ski or board.
From what I know most of them close the chalets down towards the end of April but this varies from resort to resort.
For NZ and OZ it is the opposite

Summer solstice seems like the obvious changover point... so any skiing done now counts towards the 2012/13 tally
