Help!!
Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I'm organizing a DIY week in Schladming over New Year's for 2 adults. It's our first time there (and in Austria in general).
Accommodation has been the tricky part, but after much searching we managed to find a room at the Planaihof Hotel (
http://www.planaihof.at/
), which is only accessible by gondola. My conccern is that the cost of food & drink may be crippling, given that they don't offer HB and the guests are captives from dusk til dawn.
If anyone has stayed there and can comment I'd be grateful!

, I've not stayed at the planaihof but I know where it is and have had lunch there before. It's a great location on top of the mountain. In the evenings you should be able to eat nearby at Onkle Willys, Schaf Alm or Planai Alm, all walking distance and I think one of those normally is open into the evening. Normally the gondola runs until 19:30 on a Wednesday. There is a road to the Planaihof from town (i've cycled up it before), open all winter. The bus runs up it but not sure on the times. The price of food on the mountain is pretty much the same as in town. Checkout the hut websites:

You'll get some great early morning conditions from the top of the hill.
Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Fantastic, many thanks for all that useful info, waynos.
Doing a circuit around the mountain huts on New Year's eve could be tempting!
