Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Childcare in Tignes (with report on Les Marmottons in Le Lac)

Scroll down for a 'trip report' on Les Marmottons.

-- original post --

Hey

Does anyone know of any good childcare options in Les Brevieres other than 'Les Marmottons', "T4 Nannies", "Snow Babies" and "Jelly & Ice Cream" - which are the ones I have discovered so far.

Child in question will be 2 1/2.

If anyone replies with 'lmgtfy' I'll carve my initials in you.

Many thanks.

paulio, those are the main ones - independants pop up during the season as well. As Brev is quite small it may be worth contacting your accom providers or maybe even contact a brev specialist like chaletchardons.com and make a polite request. PS Imgtfy - Puzzled

How long a drive is it to the other bits of Tignes then? Le Lac especially I suppose.

And does the Navette bus thingy stop by Brevieres?

Its about 20-30 mins drive up to Le Lac but then you'd have to pay to park the car. The navette doesn't go to Brevieres, only as far as les Boisses. Why don't you want to use the childcare options in les Brev?

No chance.

15 minutes if you drive like a French taxi, 20 if you have a brain.

I'll see how fast I can do it, and report back. Bear in mind I am now effectively a Frenchman.

Lockkeeper, Le Lac to Brev via the summer road on a bike - you might just crack it (if you regularly wear a yellow jersey!)

Googlemaps 8 minute route goes up the piste by the way, if you set it to go round and over the dam, it's a more sensible 12 minutes.

In summer, I'd be pretty confident of driving that in under 15 minutes. Could take much longer in winter though, depending on road conditions (snow/ice/traffic).

Just don't rely on sat nav - it normally drifts off around St Foy and you end up meandering around the lake!

Hello,

My name is Lis. I am a 25 year old Kiwi qualified nanny who is really interested in looking after your family.

I have had experience nannying since 2004 looking after children from 6 months to 17 years old. I have worked at the parlimentary creche in Wellington New Zealand, worked in all the childcare departments with P&O Australia cruise ships, and earlier this year I nannied in Saint Anton, Austria (ski town).

I think I would be perfect for this job opportunity if it is still available. I fell in love with snowboarding last year, followed the snow earlier on this year, completed another season in New Zealand and am now looking to follow another.

I also play a variety of instruments. I play the piano, saxophone, flute, clarinet, and learning the guitar.

I am energetic, caring, honest, and reliable. I love working with children, there is nothing more satisfying.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Lis

Lis, are you suggesting you'll fly from New Zealand just to look after my 2 year old for 6 days?

Little report on this, then:

Well, in the end, the little fellow (30 months old) spent his week at Les Marmottons in Tignes Le Lac. There is an identically branded place in Val Claret as well, which I assume is affiliated, but I'm talking specifically about the Le Lac one.

It was, no less than, fantastic. In every detail. Booking was friendly and straightforward, good English spoken by everyone we dealt with (although we did try our hardest to conduct ourselves in French!), the facility is great - directly outside the exit from the main car park near the Maison du Tignes, and right next to the Aeroski lift. The teachers/nannies (dunno what you'd call them really) were friendly, mega supportive when the little 'un had an occasional emotional wobble, super professional, really confidence-inspiring.

The ages of the kids ranged from 30 months (ours was the youngest) to about 5. They split the group up a bit based on age/ability, but from what I could tell the day follows a fairly similar pattern regardless.

9am until 1:45pm

Warm up exercises, jumping around etc.
Bit of skiing (up a rope tow and snowplough turns for the older ones, part-way up the rope tow and schusses along the near-flat for the tinies).
Playtime in the snow.
Then they all trog off in a big long line to a nearby caf for a slap up feed.
Finally back to the little wooden hut in the snow garden itself for some songs while the parents gradually roll up to collect.

On the final day they have an award ceremony in the afternoon involving being given a medal and watching someone in a terrifying bear suit ski down from the rope tow. Very surreal. And skippable if you haven't got the time or energy to bother with it.

Our kid has a bit of, erm, history with not getting on very well with creche arrangements (gets very upset, screams a lot, and we inevitably have to go and get him). In this case, however, by the 3rd day he literally couldn't wait to get rid of us each morning. 'bye bye daddy', and away, no tears.

One evening he showed us a snowploughing stance in the living room of our chalet, without prompting. I don't think they teach that to the really little ones necessarily, but maybe being in a group of mixed abilities let him pick it up from one of the older kids. We've been trying to get him to 'do a pizza' all season, unsucessfully - so whatever magic happened last week I don't care, but it was cool to watch him doing it.

Oh, and 270EUR for a full week of half days. Utter bargain.

Completely beyond criticism. I can't even nitpick.

(P.S. my record for the Les Brevieres to Le Lac commute in the morning was 11 minutes Cool )

Edit: I should also point out that the really young ones are taken on a 'trial' basis for the first day, with cancellation and a refund if the staff feel they won't be able to hack it. Ours is a mahoosive boy for his age (currently wearing some '4-5 years' clothing!), with a fair bit of prior 'skiing' experience. I can imagine there are plenty of 30 month olds who wouldn't be up to it though, so it is dependent on the will and physique of the child to a certain extent.

There are also 'full' days available for the older kids, but we elected to only take mornings-with-lunch as it's all a bit much for a toddler that age to do a full day of anything.
