I'm edging the family skis using an 88 degree guide and file. It's sharpening the edge fine but the guide is driving bits of file debris into the base which can't be good. What am I doing wrong? Advice appreciated!

Not an expert but:
1. Not cleaning enough
2. Teeth at the wrong angle or file upside down so driving swarf towards base guide rather than away from it

Some people use tape you can put on the bases to protect them (bit of a faff!)
Make sure the files fitted to send the swarf over the topsheet, most files teeth are angled diagonally and depending which direction you're using it...left/right handed you can feed the swarf over the base side or preferably over the topsheet side.
Try not to overlap return passes too much also if doing a long single pass, wipe the base after each pass.
A lazy option that can help is to use guides with rollers that run on the base surface which works well to reduce any loose swarf scratching the base surface.
Main one though is to wipe the base after every pass.

I find a single pass with plenty of pressure gives a nice thin spiral of swarf, easy to keep clear. I also wipe the guide frequently and use a brass brush to keep the file clean.
