Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! ESF Fleche- any advice please?

Eldest son (now 10) has just had a try for the Flèche at Peisey. He didn't get a badge- the minimum time required that day being about 59s and he did 63s (ish).

We really didn't know what to expect.

Any advice / info gratefully received.

We both took it very well! (there seemed to be plenty of adults having a try when we were there- I quite fancy a try but only when junior has a badge first).

The Fleche is taken very seriously by the French and your standard is entered on a national data base so you can progress through the different levels in different resorts. The standard to achieve Gold, Silver, Bronze should be the same in all resorts.

What standard is your son/yourself? i.e ESF 1,2,3, bronze,gold star?

Advice - Basically the less you skid and the more you carve the faster you will be wink

Check out a competition course for a week, at ESF in Tignes it would cost you €146 for 5 days, your skiing would improve lots Very Happy

As Stewart says, it is, or can be 'a serious test'. For example one of the entry requirements to train as a pisteur is to have obtained Fleche de vermeil.

My son at 14 now has the full set from bronze to gold (including about 15 at silver times!) His 'advice' to achieve the best times possible includes; Lose any unnecessary clothing, into the gates high and out low, start the turn early, work right to the finish line, ski on the very edge of control (it works for him, scares the whatsit out of me!) and most importantly have fun!

We had a group of Belgiums training in Tignes last week and they had to achieve Gold in the Fleche for a Belgium instructor award. A high standard that only 4 out of 10 achieved.

During the French holidays we can have 6 competition groups doing slalom(Chamoix) and GS (Fleche) training. The times are set by the instructors taking the groups and the rivalary between the instructors is intense to say the least. No one wants to be last wink

stewart woodward, yes it all was quite bit more serious than we expected with lots of much older kids, teens and adults who looked ilk ether knew whatr they were doing.

There were some other younger skiers.

Ed junior is 10, got his ESF gold star badge in Feb 2011 which did include a timed course.

Last week he was in the ESF competition class in Peisey but still was a bit unsure as to what to expect.

I think I'll wax and edge his skis next time and look for some 4 buckle boots!
