Good afternoon.
When we take to the slopes in the new year, it will be the first time with our baby daughter. After looking for some time it would be good to get some advice on where we can buy suitable clothing for her. The internet does not sem to be forthcoming. Thanks for any help. Ed

Hi Ed, my daughter was a similar age last winter and we found it hard to find stuff. Woolworths had some snowsuits but I don't think we bought anything there. I'll try and remember. Or just ask Mrs Empty

We have just bought a nice Columbia snow suit for our daughter from ellis brigham(she will be 7 months when we go to Austria). Was £15 in the sale, should have been £40

For little ones, the charity shops often have lots of warm stuff, once autumn sets in. As she will only wear it for one season, and will obviously not be out in howling winds and blizzard (you're not going to carry her round the slopes in one of those backpacks, are you??) the key thing will be soft warm comfy layers, rather than high-tech. She doesn't need Goretex! Good luck, by the way, in persuading her to wear sunglasses.... French babies seem to carry them off with aplomb, but British ones (ours, anyway) rip them off and throw them on the floor with scorn. The resorts hire out suitable transport, such as cute little toboggan things that they can be strapped into and dragged around, whether through the snow or the dog sh.... Have fun.

edoakes, To echo Pam's advice do try and make your offspring wear Sunglasses. We were once accomapied by a screaming toddler, it was some time before the parents realised that he was screaming because he was going snow blind

I always found the US suppliers much more geared up on this stuff, presumably because your average N American winter equates to what we come across when we go skiing ... we had a great patagonia fleece snowsuit we picked up in Canada, otherwise LL Bean and even Gap do some good stuff. Somehwere out there is a company that specialises in children sized kit for all sorts of outdoor pursuits but I never bought anything from them, as all too expensive. At 12 months you may experience strong resistance from your offspring to sitting still in a sledge (or anywhere else for that matter); if toddling/sliding is an issue then snow boots (gap, S&R, French supermarkets) will be essential.
For the British climate and waterproof layers I can't recommend these people in Scotland highly enough, my children have been wearing them since they could walk (not the same ones, they've progressed through the sizes!!) - essential wear if your children plans to venture outdoors. Although not cheap, they pay dividends in terms of not having a wet complaining infant/filthy clothes/washing etc ...

edoakes, I'd agree always bought my kids gear in France or Italy, we bought a ski suit in Cortina for my youngest daughter when she was 4 months old. If there's a Decathalon near you could be worth trying, or if you're taking in a booze cruise to Calais there's an excellent GO outlet in CitiEurope.

OK, I've remembered. We bought Beth's at John Lewis - I've also remembered that we left it to the last minute which was why we struggled to find anywhere. I think all the ski shops were probably getting ready for the summer.
Oh, and make sure the snowsuit has detachable foot bits. Or no foot bits at all.

We took our son at 18 months and got one suit from M & S for about £15 and one from Asda which was much cheaper ( £8 ) and in my opinion better quality. The one item that we struggled to get hold of in the right size was a pair of decent gloves. As hinted at above, we got all of this gear, but had the devils own job actually trying to make him keep it all on

Columbia make a range of suitable snowsuits for toddlers at reasonable prices. Not hard to find in the shops/internet and will do the job fine.
Didriksons make some great toddler kit too (better than Columbia but a bit more expensive) and have a UK online shop plus a few other on-line suppliers.
We've used both the above with our daughter, now aged 2, and she hasn't complained yet. Make sure you get some decent base layers too, they make a big difference to both comfort and warmth. Our little one has nothing less than Icebreaker Merino, but she wears it all year round and you can generally use it for much longer than the age ranges suggest.

pam w, I wouldn't get it from a charity shop. My little ninja totally trashes her snowsuits (she has had 4 now and she is only 13 months old).
we have had two of the columbia ones referred to above with down filling. They are far and away the best of the ones we have tried. I would say that you should definitely aim for a down suit (be it columbia or one of the other ones). Yes they are a bit more expensive, but honestly you're only talking about maybe an extra £20 and it is soooo worth it. Ours wears her snow suit everywhere from sunday walks to friday night rugby matches. Once you have one your kid will live in it so the quality pays off.

Have to interject here! We are the UK's leading stockist of Didriksons children's clothing (uktrailmonster, the Didriksons site you refer to is not THE Didriksons but someone portraying themselves as Didriksons). Search for our store - Funky Rascal and what we have left of our winter gear is online. During the season we have 2piece and 1piece snow/ski suits from a size 80 (12-24 months) up to size 130 (7-8 yrs) and then 2piece sets from 130-170 (up to around 16 yrs). also fleeces, base layers, sofshells.

grazzenger, Yes, fair point about the Didrikson's UK website being just one of several importers and not a direct manufacturers site. Not that it really matters too much. Actually got ours from Simply Piste as they were significantly cheaper at the time - Kilimanjaro Coverall (One piece suit). Quality is outstanding for the price, significantly better than the 2 Columbia suits she has - although they get the job done too.
We bought this suit for our 2 yr old: http://www.simplypiste.com/products/Didriksons/KidsKilimanjaroCoverall-Fuschia.aspx (£50)
