Cormayeur Report

I just thought i would leave a report on Cormayeur where we were at the weekend. I couldnt find much many recent reports on it beofre we went.

We thought mid march would be fine but not taking into account how low the resort was. We arrived on Friday 16th to baking temperatures, I was in a t shirt and it was like being in Spain in the summer. Beautiful to sit in but badly affected the snow. We were staying in the Dolonne side and the closest lift was the bubble up to Plen Checroiut. If there had been any snow in the resort it would have been ski in ski out but there wasn’t, it was brown fields. The runs back into town were not skiable at all. We were starting to panic a bit when we were going up in the bubble. The snow at the top was very slushy and the cannons hadn’t been on as it wasn’t cold enough. They had been bashed but they soon went back to being very slushy in a few hours. The worst were the low (infact all of the blue runs were horrible) blue runs back into Val Veny and Plen Checroiut and around the Mount Chetif area. We went higher up to Internationale and Lazey which were better.

It snowed a fair bit on Sunday 18th and visibility was poor but at least the temperature had dropped. There was excellent snow yesterday morning and we had a fantastic day. The best runs by far were Lazey, Le Greye, Checroiut (best run in the morning back down to PC), Aretu. All round Plan de Gabba and Youla were good. I would avoid Internationale down the Bertolini as it was icy and horrible, the blacks 23 and 24 had much better snow cover.

We took ourselves off to La Thuile over the weekend as one day in a different resort was covered by the lift pass. It was the best decision we could have made, the snow was perfect and the runs back into the town were still skiable. The pistes were very well looked after and not remotely icy or scrapped. Really enjoyable day and I would recommend to anyone. Cormayuer can be skied in a day but La Thuile much bigger and much higher and if you felt the need you can then ski over to La Roserie. It was literally only a 20 minute drive and very easy to find, well sign posted. I believe you can get a bus as well but we had our own car.

All in all we loved Cormayeur although the way the pistes were at the start of the weekend was disappointing. Excellent short distance from Geneva, easy to find and basically right beside the Mont Blanc tunnel.

The food on the mountain was very good and would recommend Christiana for lunch at Plen Checrouit. In the resort we loved the night times, Bar Roma was a hit and we visited at some point every night. the free buffet was a winner. The American bar was also good as was the cocktail bar along Via Roma. Would highly recommend Ancien Casino for dinner – excellent pizza and pasta and Monty Frety for a special night out. It was a lovely restaurant with cosy atmosphere, excellent food and service and a choice of good wines without being stupidly expensive. I'm sure there are lots we missed but those were our favourites!

Also if you are planning on going I would def recommend that you hire your skis on the mountain or else lugging them from the town won’t be much fun!

rachelski, I didn't think you could ever really hope to ski back down to the resort in Courmayeur?

There's one run down to Dolonne in Courmayeur. It's a fairly boring snow road but an alternative to downloading on the gondola to Dolonne or the main cable car back to town. That's the only run to resort level I can think of.
