Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

St Johann in Tirol - resort review

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
Evening all, just got back from a trip to St Johann in Tirol and once again after taking some advice from snowHead I thought I'd let you know how we got on.

St Johann is a lovely little town with quite nice vibe about it. Plenty of nice little bars and cafes to keep you going. If you're looking for some serious apres then possibly will be a little quiet...it was perfect for us who look for nice food and a few quiet beers later on. We found one little cafe/bar (Trumer I think it was called) which was tucked down a side street close to the square which was very friendly and mostly full of locals. Good wine and some great looking cake! Also smoke free which is unusual for St Johann - this did get annying after a while as it made you not want to go into the busier places as you would come out coughing and smelling bad! Makes you appreciate the UK! Wherever you went, the beer/wine/prosecco was all about 3 - 3.50 euros, so pretty reasonable. Certainly you could go anywhere and have a few casuals without worrying about being stung when it came to bill time. Quite nice for a ski resort - certainly an attraction of the Austrian resorts.

We found the skiing fantastic in the Tirol. St Johann is a central point from which you can use as a base to travel the wider region. We skiied St Johann, Steinplatte, Kitzbuhel and Fieberbrunn and we spoke with others in our hotel who travelled to the ski welt - schaffau/elmau etc.. St Johann is well served by many busses from the main gondola station and the train station. All the bus and train fares were included in your ski pass which also made things very easy. We would be intermediate skiiers and dont really get involved in the off piste side of things (intentionally) so cant really comment on that side of things but if you enjoy getting some good miles under your belt and variation then this area is excellent. There is plenty of challenging skiing to be had and some fantastic reds where you can get some good speed up! We were very lucky in terms of how quiet all the resorts were. Kitz was busier but you would expect that with it being a bigger resort. In all the rest we virtually had the slopes to ourselves. Out of the places we visited we enjoyed Steinplatte and, in particular, Fieberbrunn a lot. We visited the latter twice on sunny days due to the south facing slopes and were not dissapointed. Some very challenging slopes and some great reds and blues. The free ride tour was in Fieberbrunn when we were there and described it as Austrias best kept secret...can certainly see why.

All the mountainside restaurants were again very reasonable in price and you could get a good feed for 2 with change from a 20. Some favourite restaurants were at the end of the red 6a run in St Johann and at the end of red/blue 6 in Fieberbrunn - lots of deckchairs to even out the panda mark tan!!! The goulashsoup was always a decent should and there was a potato dish with small pieces of meat and a fried egg which was amazing...Tirolean something or other, cant remember the name sorry. Also have to mention the struddle which Mrs G tried at any given oportunity, excellent stuff. Mr Kipling doesnt do it justice.

We travelled with Crystal and I have to say we were disappointed with the service, or lack of, to more accurate. On the bus en route to the resort, one of the reps was pretty rude to a group of men sat in front of us. On arrival in St Johann we got off the bus in the street and the bus driver pointed us in the direction of the hotel - the reps didnt even wish us a good holiday, let alone escort us to the hotel door or show us off the bus. Pretty poor in my opinion. If you were a first time skier I imagine you would be pretty lost. We didnt hear from anyone again until the bus journey home when the rep on the bus seemed intent on talking over the mic for a lot of the journey. All in all this did not detract from our visit but worth mentioning I think.

I dont want to finish on a negative so would just finish by saying that St Johann and the surrounding area is brilliant and we are considering a return in the summer for some walking and biking. A lovely little spot and again we have returned with a great impression of Austria.

See you next November snowheads!

You'll enjoy that too. In Fieberbrunn try the walk up to the Wildseeloderhaus. If you have a car, you can drive up to the Gasthof Lärchfilzhochalm and walk from there. Or if you are relying on public transport, take the bus to the main Fieberbrunn lifts and go up to the Lärchfilzkogel, the top station of the red gondola, and start out from there.

Another pleasant walk, this one mainly on the flat, is round the Pillersee by St. Ulrich.
