Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

I am 5foot10 and weigh in at a spritely 13 stone. I am a complete beginner and have purchased a set of Fischer Vc100 skis 168cm. Will these be Ok for me to be getting started on ?

Why not just buy yourself some decent boots, and rent some skis instead?

Boots first but those sound at the short end of OK.

My first hired skis were 155cm and the second time was 164cm from the same hire shop.

Tiger, thanks for that wink

I was going to give them a go anyway but was interested if anyone knew the skis and had any comment.

I'm about the same size as you and my current skis range from 169 for the Elan Speedwave 11s to 174 for my Storm Rages

Thanks Davkt,
That helps. Presumably a lower ability beginner would start with slightly shorter skis. Would that be the case ?

OnThePiste, I would go for a decent set of well fitted boots - in my experience....

As you have tried both 155 & 164 cm skis, which one's worked best for you ??

Ski length seems to be a little bit of black magic in my view, height between chin & nose seems to be a generic rule of thum, go longer the more experienced & faster you ski.
But if you have already brought a pair then try them on the mountain & see what you think. My first brought pair were fine for my first holiday on them, but soon after as my experience and ability grew, I also grew out of them and was able to move on.

To be honest my first two ski sessions were quite short and I noticed no difference at all between the two ski sizes. I put this down to my very cautious snow ploughing lack of ability. I need to push myself more and try to learn parallel turns.
