to be honest i dont know, but theyre spending money on it re plans, etc, planning application due to go in end april, after public consultation in march. What was nice to see was a comment from someone local who said that although it would look over his garden he was all for something that generated jobs/money for the local area.......how very refreshing and also very unusual!!!

iskar, I think there are quite a few locations where planning permission has been granted, or at the very least the local authority would like t see a development like this. Trouble is there are very companies that seem to be able or willing to invest £20M+ to actually build them. I'd like to see one in your area, but don't hold your breath would be my advice.

The grapevine tells me the land is bought and initial finance is in place, hence the applications going in.
The bats are also in the belfry ... or is it newts

This most likely means someone's taking a punt by funding the upfront costs, probably a few hundred thousand.

You know it makes sense.
|
It's not on the airfield, it's going to be on the old RAF Camp.
Not been much in the press recently about it, but as far as i am aware, it's all still going ahead.
The funding is in place, just got to get Government approval, but hoping to break ground Dec 11/Jan 12.
Here is the LeisureDome info.

This is depressing why is there nothing in the largest populated and well off area of England the south east? surely some entrepreneur can come up with cash? Say Tunbridge Wells or Folkestone the Pfizer site, (Prozac manufacturer) they can help build it so salve their conscience.

Cynic, Many people would say that Milton Keynes and Hemel Hempstead are both in "the South East" of England.
The Norf doesn't start at London

Indeed. Everyone in the SE is within reasonable reach of a snowdome (in the sense that you could go there and back in a day). That's not true in the South West. I have a friend who lives near Truro. She did a little bit of skiing last year, in France, and is keen to do a bit more practice before coming out again but there's just nowhere. Weston super Mare would still be a lot further from Truro than Hemel Hemstead is from, say, Folkestone.

All true, but there are a lot more people in the South-of-the-Thames bit of the South East than there are in Cornwall and Truro is always going to be a long way from anywhere.

She has Plymouth, Torquay and Exeter artificial slopes to choose from: all much nearer than Weston.

RobW, but they're dryslopes. My folks are from Somerset, so WSM would be great - i currently have to drive to Tamworth, i think it takes about three hours.

rogg, They are still places you can practice skiing, which is what pam w's friend seems to be looking for.

RobW,
Plenty of dry slopes in the south east as well
Really it's down to whether a business case can be made, a willing investor + planning permission. There is no right to have a snow slope within x hours of you (mind you you could ask the Court of Human Rights to judge this - you never know what crazy idea they may come up with).
Having said that, it would be brilliant to have a snowdome in WSM (I live in Somerset). I've not heard any updates though, hope it's still going ahead.

She's a very old lady - even older than I am and she only started last year - and very nervous. I don't think dry slopes would be right for her. She can go to WsM next year - if she's spared.
