Cathy, I know you said that Banff is a better base for skiing the three areas, but, which area would you consider the better to ski ? Lake Louise appears to have three ski areas, with back bowls that look good fun. Is Sunshine as good or better ? Cheers

Ah, depends on what you mean by better!
In my opinion LL has the more challenging skiing and has the back bowl and then up into another smaller hill, the larch area. There are of course more gentle cruising runs to be had.
Sunshine may have better snow and although it doesn't have a back bowl, it does have 4 separate mountains/hills with skiing inbetween. It also has Delirium Dive and the Wild West if you are that way inclined!
Norquay is a much smaller area and is steep - normally seems to be icy when we've visited but if there's been a good dump must be great. The local race teams train there.
What kind of skiing are you after?

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Agree with Cathy, LL is good though seem to have spoilt a few of the nicer runs lower down the mountain with terrain parks.
Goats Eye mountain at Sunshine is excellent and the rest of the ski area is good and of course lots of natural snow. If fact I believe that they don't have snow making equipment at all.
Norquay - never really liked it always found it icy and lots of man made snow, though as Cathy said its much better with some decent snow. Main problem seems to be early morning sun and lots of shadow latter in the day, probably reason for the icy conditions.

erica2004, Both Sunshine and Lake Louise are excellent areas if its a powder day then Sunshine is better even when the snow fall is not fresh the conditions at Sunshine are better the snow does not deteriorate as much as LL. In terms of the skiing there are excellent runs at both ski areas and would rate them both as similar in terms of variety and difficulty. The thing that most people don't like about Sunshine is the ski out at the end of the day. the ski out is the old road up to Sunshine it gets pretty busy and crowded at the end of the day., its well patrolled but can get a little hairy when people can't handle the conditions if its icy, often better to ride to gondola back down. At lake Louise the ski out is simple as all the runs back to the lodge end in nearly the same place. Norquay has some good runs if the black doubles are open. The runs at Norquay are steeper and more consistent in gradient than the other two areas definitely worth spending a day there if snow conditions are excellent because it never gets too busy in fact on one day last march we seemed to have the runs to our selves and a few deer.
One things for sure I'm going back this year for 14 days maybe try and get to Kicking horse as well for day or 2

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

one caveat. much of Sunshine is above treeline, hence, Louise is a better choice on a cloudy day or snowy day.
both are great places to ski.
the run-out at Sunshine can be avoided by down loading on the gondola.

Can't agree more with comments from Russell. Ski out at Sunshine is probably best avoided if it crowded or if snow hasn't been good as it can be stoney.
Its still possible to ski in the trees at Sunshine though the variety of runs isn't quite as good as LL. Had one cloudy/very cold day last season where it wasn't possible to ski some of the higher runs and we spent a few hours exploring the runs through the trees. The cold made the snow very grippy so on some of the flatter parts it was very eay to come to a grinding halt even though we'd had the skis preped the previous night.

Totally agree, I prefer this hill, its a locals hill , its steep , uncrowded you dont have to bus upto LL or Sunshine.
IMHO Totally underestimated
