mattiwilkin, we hired from Intersport Bauer ( http://www.sport-bauer.at/en/location_stores.asp?Menu=Rental ) on Skiliftstrasse last year, and I'd recommend them 100%. They had the kit we wanted (Fischer RC4 and Progressor), at a good price, and the service was excellent. Plus they're 20 feet from a lift and 10 feet from one of the best apres bars in the area, and they opened earlier than everywhere else on Sunday when we needed a quick start. The fact that you can specify a ski rather than taking what they give you from the "gold" pool was a big plus for us, and they were also happy to do exchanges during the week if we wanted to try something different. All the kit we got was in great condition, and newly serviced.
Their main shop is 100 metres away on the main street, but as that's further from the lifts and on a cobbled hill, I'd recommend going for the smaller shop. When we were waiting for them to open, the newly-serviced skis arrived in a van from the main shop in racks, and were wheeled in as we watched, so there's no problem of stock not being available outside of the main shop.

£142 is a good price, but Sport2000 in my opinion are not the best for customer service. Intersport Bauer are good, particularly the shop opposite the Turm & Kohlmais lifts mentioned by ousekjarr (rather than the main shop) and they have lockers there for their customers. SkiPro and Hagleitner also fine. Hansi's (above Bobby's Pub at the lower end of the main street) is also a good option unless you want a particular specialist ski. Intersport and Snowacademy do package deals including rental and tuition if you are looking for ski school lessons.

How do Treffpunkt Europsport rate? http://saalbach.skiset.co.uk
I am looking to take advantage of the fresh snow and start to venture off piste - would they be able to offer me skis to suit? And would I need to ask for Rockered ski's or All-Mountain skis?

The only place in Saalbach that I've seen with fat skis (Salomon BBRs don't count!) is Hagleitner (on the right hand side between Fuerstauer Ski School office and Spar). They had Atomic Bentchetlers and some weird yet massive Coreupt thing for sale, not sure what (if any) the have to rent.
The link you posted says they have rockered skis in their equipment section, although they don't list models. However, the picture makes it look like they only have BBRs (don't count) and K2s with marketing rocker (barely count).

Hansi's (next door but one to Bobby's Pub) is definitely worth checking out. Hansi runs his own little rental shop, speaks English fluently, and and will take a personal interest in your needs. He has new equipment each season and will probably offer you a tot of his home-made schnapps or a beer from the bar in his shop. He may also do you a deal if you say that I sent you. He will also fix you up with a pair of lederhosen in the summer!

location of the shop is ideal!
|
blondends, In that case, I would think that Hansi's shop beckons, and I should think that Hansi will gladly price-match. I'm not aware of any connection that he may have with anyone else. The other place you mention may be next door. Don't hesitate to give him a ring - he's a very friendly chap. Mention that I recommended you to him, and he'll look after you.

blondends, On second thoughts, it seems that Hansi is also Ski-set, judging by the big Ski-set signs in his window and on his door - see the photos of his shop on his website!

blondends, Hansi's is indeed the local SkiSet agent in Saalbach - and it is directly opposite Hotel Central.

Hi everyone - we have finally booked our holiday in Saalbach, after reading glowing reviews on Austria, decided to take the plunge and give it a go! We have booked the Reiterhof Alpinresort sport & spa - so please don't anyone tell me bad reports on it, as it's booked now, and can't be changed! Anyway, having trouble finding a website to enable me to book ski pass in advance - I know we could do it at the hotel, but would prefer to buy now if we could. Also, the ski shop beside the hotel (snowacademy i think) seems quite expensive - (we only need to hire ski's). Can anyone advise of a ski shop that is close to the hotel that is reasonably priced, and we could book online. Since I have never been to Saalbach before, I have no idea on location, so your advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You know it makes sense.
|
mcphail, Congratulations - you won't regret it! Buying the lift pass at any of the three gondola cable-car stations in the village centre is simple and quick so can't see any necessity to pre-book.
As for equipment hire, go to Hansi, as mentioned above, and he will look after you - see my post above dated 24/01/12. His shop is only a stone's throw from the Reiterhof (where my son used to work incidentally). He's located next door but one to Bobby's Pub at the bottom of the main village street.

mcphail, The Reiterhof Alpinresort is owned by the same guy who owns the Snowacademy shops and ski school, so you could start by asking if they will do a package deal for your ski rental. If not, as you can see from this thread, there are plenty of shops in village. The Reiterhof is in the centre of the village, so all of the shops (Hansi's, SkiPro, Intersport, Hagleitner etc) are within a 5 minute walk. I think that most have online booking, and Hansi's is also the local agent for Skiset. I wouldn't worry about the hotel. It is one of the best in the village and has a good reputation and great location - again only 5-10 minutes walk from all of the main lifts and if the snow is good you can ski almost to the front door. You don't need to buy the ski pass online; you can buy it in the hotel reception or in the Snowacademy shop next door, or at the lift stations. You have no use for it until you get to Saalbach anyway. The price is the same everywhere.

Hello Tatman
We're off to Saalbach on 25th feb, staying with Ski Miquel at chalet-hotel Christina. Hope you don't mind me asking a couple of questions
to someone who is "on site". If you are aware of the location of our accommodation i would appreciate you taking the time to steer us towards our
best ski rental option. If you don't know this chalet then the brochure describes it as being "5 minutes level walk to schattberg xpress lift"
Also do any rental places already mentioned have storage overnight for skis/boots as my wife hates tramping about in ski boots!
Thanks in advance
Cheers Geoff
PS any advice on the above from anyone else is more than welcome obviously.
PPS i hate tramping about in ski boots too!

Thanks very much quinton and Tatman's Tours ( I have your guide, thank you!). Think will go ahead with Hansis rental, as price is good, and trust your recommendations. One other slight dilema - transfers! Have tried transferservice, but no luck, as they are fully booked. Can anyone recommend any others reasonably priced? Our flight gets in at 13 40 on 17th March, and the shuttle service leaves at 1430 - which leaves us 50 mins to get through security, and get our bags - I think this would be a bit tight (and a problem if the flight was late!) - so really need to source a private transfer. Any suggestions appreciated, and thanks in advance.

mcphail, If you book the Holiday Shuttle and provide your flight number and ETA they will usually wait 10-15 mins if they can see you are delayed (or that you have arrived and are in the process of collecting bags). 50 minutes should easily be sufficient time. If you are severly delayed, call them and they will usually try to put you on the next Shuttle. There is no security to get through on arrival and the passport control is usually quite fast and efficient. If there are 4 or more in your group, it is cheaper to book a VIP taxi from the Holiday Shuttle, which will then of course wait for you. An alternative company to try is Vorderegger.
geoffkay, Chalet Christina is indeed 5 minutes from the Schattberg Express, so 5 minutes from all of the hire shops. There are lockers at Sport 2000 and the Intersport opposite the Kohlmais lift - most of the other shops let you leave your street shoes in the shop if you ask nicely, but with no lockers, and let you store skis/boots overnight.

Hello quinton,
And thank you. It would seem to be quite a compact area in the centre of town, so none
of the shops are ruled out really, but we would like over night storage .
We'll look into sport 2000 and intersport near Kohlmais lift.
Cheers Geoff

mcphail, I agree with quinton, (Another transfer company worth considering for groups of at least 3 is Oberkopfler Reisen - 120 euros for the vehicle and private transfer.)
geoffkay, Ditto! Hagleitner on Schulstrasse is probably the nearest but I'd walk along the main road and go to Hansi's at the bottom of Dorfstrasse.

geoffkay, The Kohlmais Lift (directly opposite us) is the opposite side of the village from Chalet Christina - much depends on where you'll be doing most of your skiing, although, as you say, the village is fairly compact. You can download the piste map from www.saalbach.com

mcphail, regards transfers you might be interested in www.transferservice.at
They are €99 one way private transfer, I have used them before to Obertauern and just booked them for my trip in March. I think it is good value. I used the shared transfer from Holiday Shuttle last month at €39, which as I was on my own was a more viable, however they travel at fixed times and I was stuck in salzburg airport for nearly 4 hours before my flight home due to timings.
As there will be two of us next trip it is only €40 euros return more than a shared transfer and they will travel at my timings. Guess if you can get more in the car it is a no brainer.

ribblevalleyblue, Agree - transferservice.at are good, particularly at the price. But they are so cheap that it is very hard to actually get a booking with them, as Geoff has mentioned above. In 6 years / 20+ trips I have only managed once.

quinton, good point just re-read that Geoff had mentioned them before, perhaps because Im arriving on a Friday my dates have just worked, as I only booked this morning for 16th March returning 24th. Just hope they turn up now !
