Poster: A snowHead
|
I will be doing a swing through Eastern Europe, and am looking for any advice about where to go, stay, etc. Tentatively, I will be doing Zakopane, Poland, some place in the Tatras in Slovakia, the resorts of Sarajevo (i.e., where the Olympics took place), some place in Greece and Bulgaria (as I understand it, there is 1 good resort in both countries), and then perhaps Sinaia in Romania. I have already skied at Kranjaska Gora, Kobla & Vogel in Slovenia, and Poiana Braşov in Romania. I don't care to do the resorts in Ukraine since they all seem to be dinky. Next year I plan to go to Sochi, Russia as I hoping by then all the resorts and infrastructure should be up in anticipation of the Olympics the next year.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

It depends what kind of skiing you want,,, For offpiste and backcountry Vasilitsa and Karpenisi in Greece, and Brezovica in Kosovo is real hidden gems,

+1 to Brezovica, Kosovo.
And Popova Shapka, Macedonia; Kolasin and Savin Kuk, Montenegro.

I have been to Bansko and my parents have an apartment out there. Enjoyed it but will not go there over new year again as the queues were awful. Outside of New Year though parents have had no problem with the queues at all though.

Skiing in Sinia is interesting. There is a large relatively boring bowl on top of the mountain and routes down through the trees back to the gondola. If there is snow all the way down it looks interesting. If not it isn't.
Sinia also has the oldest working chair lift I have ever seen. A man is employed to stop the wooden 2 seater chair smacking into your legs and breaking them.
Time your visit well. Now that the Romanians tend to go to Austria to ski the queues are shrinking but queuing for the leg breaker isn't my idea of a good afternoon out.

There is a really old single seat chair lift which takes you up and down to a restaurant up from Selva. Going up wasnt too bad but I must admit i was somewhat nervous coming down it again
