Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Magnetic ski rack: Anyone have any experience of using one?

I'm thinking about buying a magnetic ski rack for use with rental cars. Anyone ever used one? Do they attach to the roof securely enough? Any paintwork damage? It would be using mainly for local driving rather than motorway, typically Les Arcs to Tignes or other resorts in the Savoie, and for whatever rental car I'm allocated at the airport.

Yeah, I have one, and sometimes use it going up to MK in the summer.

Works well, no paint damage - take it off carefully.

BUT...
It means your skis are in the open air, and exposed to all the wonderful dirt/salt etc that is around the roads, so I'd advise you to wrap a plastic bag around your bindings, and if you were thinking of getting the skis serviced - leave it until you get to the resort.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Wear The Fox Hat, thanks, that's helpful. My skis are now kept permanently in resort, so the rack would only be used for occasionally driving from one resort to another.

rob@rar.org.uk,
I was given one which I suspect was not well designed as the skis were higher off the car than is standard thereby creating greater leverage from the wind. When travelling at speed on an autoroute the rack and skis flew off inspite of being apparently well attached before. Fortunatley there was noone behind us and the only damage was to the rack and a pair of bindings.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

I've hire a car with them and they can cope with 150km/h with no problem. As fox says they do live in the world of dirt as a result and it was very easy to see, on the hire car, where previous users had put the bases - you just look for the many fine scratches.

Yes, I've got one I used to use for exactly that a few years ago. We used to leave the skis in the apartment and the carrier so it was there to use. The only problem I ever found was the position of some sunroofs if the car roof sloped too much. But basically, it was fine and well worth having. They're fairly cheap in France and available quite widely.

rob@rar.org.uk, Whenever I've hired Galaxy's and the like, I've found is possible (and practical) to bungy skis (in their bag) to the bars fitted to the roof.

Whenever I used a magnetic tank bag on my motorbike, I use a towel between the bag and the tank to protect the paint.....
