So, currently I have a small dakine helipro which if i'm being honest is far too small for me, it doesn't fit my back well atall so upon conversing with a few friends the consensus is I should be looking at a bag with a longer back, i've pretty much decided on a large Osprey kode 30, but it is an awful lot of money to be spending on a pack(I would be using it a lot then not skiing too but the cost still bites a bit) are there any maybe less specialist packs that I could maybe be looking at?

I've just got back from snow and rock after the same thing, I'm a big old lump and the dakine hali packs are tiny, the heli pack pro is a hell of a lot of money for, as you say, not a lot of bag, Saloman have one in snow and rock which is cheaper, but bigger. I'm considering that one or north face have a number of styles. I'll keep an eye on this thread before deciding though

Scott are making some excellent packs now as they are strengthened in the right places. For lightness Deuter are great and durable, as are Osprey although they're a bit fussy for me.

I'm an Osprey fan. Ski with a Switch 16 from a few years ago and carry an Atmos 35 in the summer for the whole family's gubbins. One good thing is a choice of back lengths. I originally bought a m/l Switch but found it too long so swapped for a s/m which is great. I'm a m in the Atmos which comes in s/m/l.
The models have changed a bit so I'm not 100% up to date but I reckon they're worth a look.

Another vote for Osprey here. I've got a Kode 22 (long back). I was considering a Dakine Heli Pro, the Osprey I bought, and the Black Diamond Bandit. What sold me on the Osprey particularly is the versatility of the pack. It seemed to contain the good parts of both of the other packs, in a nice low profile shell. I can easily fit a spare pair of goggles, gloves, neck warmer/scarf, spare layer/hoody and even my jacket if necessary - plus shovel and probe. Very comfortable and great back support. I'm sure the others would have been very good too, it just seemed like the Osprey suited my needs more.

MattMattMatt, I too found the Heli Pro too small and I didn't like where it sat on my back (felt too low/annoying despite doing the straps up and despite it being a girl's one so in theory not as big) plus I thought the waist strap was rubbish/flimsy. I like the Camelbak packs. I've got the Roulette which is the women's version of the Pit Boss. Can't fault it, I've worn it for 2 weeks now and it holds everything, shovel, probe with plenty of room besides without feeling bulky. I wore it on chairlifts and in bubbles no problem either. I carried my laptop and my helmet in there for hand luggage on the flights out and back too, again plenty of compartments and room for other stuff besides without it being a massive pack.

The tube comes with a tap on it as well.
No complaints whatsoever. Very comfortable to wear and it holds a fair bit of water too if need be, the back support is good and very sturdily made. I had a smaller one before (the Muse) which was good (but didn't come with the tap on the tube) but upgraded to this larger one. It's all good.
The Pit Boss is 1.5L larger than the one I've got so it's 29.5L total.

Its just a bag. Go visit a shop with lots of bags, and bring your usual ski jacket with you. Try em on til you find one that fits well that you like... the brand is pretty much secondary (or tertiary, after price!)

I've been amazed at how well my Black Diamond Covert has lasted. It's been thoroughly abused since 2008, for skiing and carrying books/etc around at uni. It still looks as new. No wear and tear at all. Plenty of room in it for food, spare layers, drink, avi kit, etc. Easy ski carry 'system.' The built in Avalung is a nice bonus feature too.

Headed though to glasgow today to have a proper look around, decided on the large kode 30 after I had looked at all that was on offer. really impressed with how it sits on my back and the features.
The helmet carrying system is excellent.

just bought heli pro after trying them both on again, but google lived up to it's reliable reputation and I got it for the same price as snow and rock are selling the heli pack. WIN

Most dakines have some form of ski carry yeah. usually Diagonally across the pack IIRC
