Depends how far you want to travel - there a couple of hotels in Tahoe City - one's a Travelodge IIRC on the mian street. Plenty of B + B's around too.
You could go further and look in Truckee, short drive or Head the other way towards Kings Beach or Incline, all within 20 mins drive approx.
It just depends what you want, how much you want to spend and for how many ? I take it its a DIY trip ?

Tahoe City is your nearest area for cheaper hotels - takes about 15 minutes to Squaw. Truckee is about 20/25 minutes away.
Slightly cheaper will be Kings Beach and Tahoe Vista - along the lake side, approximately 30 minutes drive. There's the casinos at Crystal Bay which usually do a good deal - they are @ 35 minutes away.
Alternatively, stay in Reno at the Sands and drive up - about an hour or so.
Availability and price will be determined by when you want the accommodation for.

Or you can stay at Squaw base village. No driving requried.
Alpine Meadow and Squaw had just merged. Now you can ski both resort for the price of one.

Lots of condos around Tahoe City/Dollar Hill area. As skinanny says Kings Beach, Tahoe Vista slightly cheaper. Grannlibaken not bad if you want to rent a townhouse etc. Reno is more doable than you might imagine if you really want rock bottom accomodation rates.

But you wouldn't need to hire a car.
Factor that in and compare the cost. It may not be cheaper but might end up not too far apart. Then you gain the convinience of walking to the lift.

It seems you can get better value accommodation with reasonable ratings in Sth Lake Tahoe. The cheap stuff on the North lake seem to get very poor reviews. why is it cheaper down south?

Peter Ross, South Lake Tahoe is just cheaper - not as popular with the weekenders, and has a somewhat lower income business base.

The casinos in Reno (eg. Eldorado or Harrahs) usually have very competitive rates. There is also daily shuttle from Reno to Squaw.
