has beginner ski's changed alot in last few years???
mate is in kaprun just now 1st ski holiday. he is about 6 feet and about 90kg. the shop has giving him 1.3m ski's?? i thought about 1.6 but im no expert. any advice would be great. cheers

WASHOUT, somewhere around chin height maybe a good place to start, 130s sound like those pesky short ski thingys!

they can be very good to start on - but I think your friend should ask his instructor for advice on what skis to get.

My six year old skis on 130cm skis. My 9 year old skis 148 and he is only 143 tall.
Somehow I think something is wrong, even if my kids can ski that is a huge huge difference. I am with pam w, and get him to ask the instructor. That will give him the confidence to go back to the rental shop and ask for the right thing.

I think something is very wrong. Most respectable ski sizing guides would advise skis somewhere around 165 cm for a 6 feet tall beginner who weighs 90 kg.
The instructor will definitely be able to help him.

My best friend was a complete beginner last season, she's 5ft9, about 10 stone, and they gave her 152 skis.

There must have been some communication error. Back to the shop for some 165s I think.

I'm 5'9" and learnt on 158s a couple of years ago. 130 sounds ludicrously short.

as a beginner, 160-165 ish
I wouldnt be too worried if it was longer though. Anything shorter and I would have thought it was too unstable when you get going and you'd struggle when you graduate on to mans skis
Different era for learning but I felt it was better that the ski was too much and you developed your technique to handle them
Remember thought its not that long ago that he'd have been on 180s

Cheers for all the good advice. according to him the instructor was happy with the skis, most of the class were on similar ski's (i dont know their dimensions/ability etc). lesons and ski's was booked as a package through T/O. at the end of the day he really enjoyed it so thats whats most important !
