Poster: A snowHead

Ok it started badly with My Oh's sons boots not fitted well.
This was rectified by SOLE in Chamonix who pointed out that the boots were the wrong size to start with and fitted him with some new ones.
Took the boots back to S & R yesterday and they were brilliant. Full refund even though the boots had been skied in for a day.
So although they get some bad press on here I would like to give them a thumbs up for this one.

Except for fitting the wrong size boots in the first place - it's hardly a ringing endorsement, bad boots can screw up a holiday nicely and there isn't always a competent bootfitter to hand to fix matters.

I just bought some boots from snow and rock and found the staff to be really helpful and the boots fit great. I like the idea that I can take the boots back whenever I like if there are any problems too. I haven't been skiing on them yet so time will tell. I'll let you know how I get on next week.
They also did a price match with the web which saved me £55. Which was nice.

You'll excuse a little cynicism, but those two statements are mutually exclusive.
Please do report back when you've skied in them.

Chattonmill I am really glad that it worked out for you.

In my experience this is not always the case. My experience was in 2009. I would have been perfectly happy with a general credit note but I was offered something like 30% off a new pair of boots. But to be honest I didn't want to throw away any more money buying boots from them. Why throw good money after bad? Take it as a lesson learned.
Furthermore it turns out that I dropped 2 shell sizes when I got boots from somewhere that fitted my feet properly.

who, presumably, charged full price for their services and therefore don't necessarily need a thumb up anywhere. Bootfitters do get it wrong some of the time, [/shock horror alert] even those heavily praised on here. S+R are bound to get more knocking due to the fact they sell a quantity of boots that's a whole magnitude above the smaller specialists.

Yes fair point and I agree. But with higher sales volume and delegation of duties there can be problems with quality control.
You could also say that because they sell such a high volume of products that they might value each individual customer less and rely more on advertising (as opposed to an specialist independent retailer where customer recommendations and repeat business are very important).

You are right, I certainly do need to give them a good try on the slopes before I can truly judge. I guess what I was saying was 'so far, so good'. I was in the shop for a long time discussing my various options and trying on a range of boots. They took their time with me to find the right boot for my shape foot. Sure enough, when I asked to try one on that wasn't recommended by them, it didn't fit. I know thats not exactly the acid test but it gave me confidence they knew what was right for me.
The trouble is with recommending Snow + Rock is that one store and fitter can vary in customer service to another. I'd like to point out i used the Manchester Store in the Chill Factor.
I'll be sure to post how my boot works out after a 3 hour session on Wednesday and again after my trip to Flaine.

Shame they don't offer a try them take em back deal on snowboard boots - took me 3 attempts to get a half decent fit there last year - twice they got the size wrong and it's only when I got them home I realised they weren't right - I must have spent 5 hours in store altogether! Fair play the staff were helpful etc but I felt like I knew more than them - which ain't a lot! No quibble on exchanges but the whole process was pretty hit and miss - if I'd been less experienced I'd have ended up with a hopelessly poor fitting pair of boots and no chance of an exchange once worn on anger.

lib-banana, I recently bought snowboard boots and found a very 'relaxed' attitude from 2 of the 3 places I went to compared to shopping for ski boots, only S + R measured my foot, the others just brought out whatever size I told them I normally wear (shoes not snowboard boots) - which is a bit strange cos one of them told me most people wears shoes a size too big?!

zebedee, Fair point - I had a mixed experience at other shops too so I guess it comes down to the staff in the shop to some extent - so I'm not knocking s&r per se I guess - its just amazing that any shop could get it so wrong on something so important! And I guess it shows the value of perseverance when it comes to boots! Think I've been spoiled in the past cos we used to live near a really good shop ( filarinskis in Havant)

Couldn't agree more. I know of a couple of S&R fitting disasters. Too many inexperienced, poorly trained kids employed, who 'talk the talk.
S&R are perfect for nipping in, trying on and establishing the correct size prior to purchasing online.
