Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

A few of the bars may have it - Rond Point in Meribel does I know - you have to click the 'I agree' button on their access page every time you log in though which can be a pain for a smartphone.

You don't need a data connection to use the GPS on an iPhone so all the tracking type apps will work regardless of the state of the WiFi.
The only thing you need a data connection for would be to download maps, many apps will allow you to cache maps when you have a data connection and view them later without using any data. You can also just view the track recorded out on the hill when you are back in the chalet/hotel or even when you get home without needing to seek out restaurants with WiFi.

Some of the main lift stations in val thoren and courcheval have free wifi. We stayed in meribel in dec and could only find wifi in the bars. Evolution bar has free wifi and computers.

This. Used the "ski tracks" app on my phone and it saved everything for me and then added on the map overlays when I was back in the hotel with wifi; which then stayed cached on the phone for when I was out the next day.

Don't quote me on this but free.fr are doing some sort of pay as you go sim no contract and unlimited data for peanuts, very similar to GiffGaff here in the UK. May be just the ticket for people who don't want to rely on free wifi.
