Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Hi..We're looking to switch from France to Austria/switzerland for xmas/New Year 2013...self catering preferably, one non skier and the rest happy on blues/reds.We have couple of teenagers (aged 17)so need a bit of of nightlife.Would prefer to drive from airport but not a necessity...the non skier would like to meet up with us at lunchtime so maybe a ski in ski out as they dont like high gondolas/cable cars(why go skiing you ask?..they just like the whole ski atmosphere thing!!) Puzzled Tough shopping list i know but any suggestions/tips greatly appreciated

jaynejackson, Welcome to Snowheads! snowHead
Whilst both Switzerland and Austria have great skiing, with the current poor exchange rate against the Swiss Franc you'll find that Austria should be cheaper. One suggestion would be Zell am See - it's quite a pretty town with (obviously) a lake side setting which might suit your non-skier. There's plenty of blue/red runs, and whilst snow cover shouldn't be a problem at Xmas/New Year, you do have the additional insurance of the nearby glacier skiing at Kaprun.
I'm sure other Snowheads will have other useful suggestions.

jaynejackson, Wengen would meet your non--skiers requirements as they can catch the train up to meet you at lunchtime and it is a nice place to be as a non-skier. Loads of reds/blues too. Not too sure about the nightlife bit though and Switzerland is eye-watering expensive at the moment with the high exchange rate.

Ski Amade in Austria would give you loads of cruisy reds/blues and good nightlife and is an easy drive from Salzburg. Not sure how good that will be for the non-skier though.

Prepare yourself for 50 completely different resort option suggestions!!

Second Zell am See. Plenty of self catering if you DIY. It's gondolas and cable cars to get up the mountain though. Plenty of places to eat at the bottom.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Not sure about what to suggest, with the current exchange rates you may wish to avoid Switzerland

If you do decide on Switzerland the Jungfrau region is mainly red runs with a reasonable number of blues and few blacks, Wengen has a little nightlife but not a lot, it's advantage is that it is possible for non skiers to meet up with the skiers at pretty much every mountain restaurant in the area, you can also use the trains to cover a reasonable amount of the mountain without needing to use a cablecar or gondola (though it's much better if you do), there are some self catering places in the area that offer ski in and out but not many, most however are only a short distance from the station, there are also a number of sledge runs in the area so maybe the non skier could give that a go, handy for carrying teh shopping back if nothing else snowHead

Zermatt? Train up. or Sunnega funicular (cut through the mountain), views better than pretty much anywhere, plenty for a non skier. Easy to meet for lunch. Exchange rate little different to last Feb when we last went. Train connection from Geneva or Zurich fantastic with the station being under the airport. Nightlife also fantastic. Hotels can be found that are great and very resonable compared with France. Lift pass dear. Self catering exists, but have not used it so you would need to check.

St Anton. Lots of variety, loads for the teenagers and non-skier and the better lunch stops are at the bottom of the runs anyway. Make the effort to go to Lech for a day to see how the other-half ski! Plenty of self catering options and only 90 mins from Innsbruck for the transfer. People often say that the resort is not for beginners, but my kids loved it when they were under 10 too.

I'd also go for Zell. Nice skiing and the non skier can even meet you at the top of the mountAin ( by a cable car that sticks fairly near the ground ) for Schnaps Hans craaaaaaaazy après ski. Pretty town too and hAs a few clubs. Only 90' from Salzburg airport by car.
