Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Meribel

Hi there,

Can anyone recommend accommodation/package in Meribel?

Was thinking about Silver Ski (again) but not sure about the two chalets they have there, one sounds out of the way and required us of bus to get to slopes? Want something reasonably priced a la Silver, but a hot tub would be a big boon!

Cheers ... Simon.

I stayed in Chalet Phoebe with Ski total 4/5 years ago. Excellent and it has a hot tub. Minbus to the slopes though but that is true of a lot of Meribel accomodation- One reason why I don't stay in Meribel anymore.

too true. and one evening, when I had to walk back, I hadn't paid enough attention to the drive in the morning and walked around for ages through identical looking boring chalet suburbs; it was practically pitch dark before I happened on the right chalet, more by luck than judgement. I had the name of it - asked in the supermarkets and got nothing but blank looks from all the Brit chalet staff (it was early December and they were all new). There are so many better places to stay than Meribel - apart from anything else it's pretty low and can be slushy when other 3V resorts (e.g. Courchevel 1650) have good snow.

reason I suggested Meribel was that it seems a lovely valley for skiing and well placed for the other two valleys (just come back from La Tania and due to weather conditions only made it across to Meribel twice and barely touched the third valley due to time constraints - any other 3V recommendations much appreciated, maybe not Courcheval so can explore more of the other valleys.

PS If we can afford it, hoping for Feb half term 2013

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Try Mottaret then, same valley but higher and most of the accomodation is right on the slopes. Not a lot of nightlife (doesn't bother me, I only go to ski nowadays) but no resort has everything. Oh, and it gets quite a lot of sun, consequently the runs down into Mottaret can be a little 'firm'. I like to call it 'Mottaret Powder'. Personally I like Courchevel best. If it snows heavily there's always a chance that the 3V links will close until they're made safe. But each valley is so vast anyway that there's plenty of skiing in each one. A lot of people spend all there time chasing around from one valley to the other, totally engrossed in the piste map and almost seem to forget to enjoy themselves.

Meribel's quite nice I think, as long as you don't mind the fact that you'll only hear British voices for an entire week.

Whilst I don't like the place in itself, Mottaret is a lot more convenient and you hear plenty of French there. Meribel is prettier but the fact that it has a restaurant actually called Le Rond-Point, but apparently dubbed 'The Ronnie', says it all! wink

stayed in Les Menuires, good links to 3 valleys. Often closed though due to weather. Next trip maybe Val Thorens. Will avoid Meribel like the plague because of the brits.

Just the sheer concentration in Meribel put me off.

You shouldn't let anyone put you off Meribel. Every resort has it's good and bad points. IMO If you base yourself in Meribel or Mottaret, then you are in the centre of the best lift system in Europe, If you like covering the miles, then you won't do better. For what it's worth I think Meribel is a nicer place to stay than Mottaret, Yes there are lot's of brits, but it is much the same in all the big French resorts. (except the more russian resorts!)

kioksor, London must also be something of a challenge...

Les Menuires and Val Thorens are dumps - to be avoided. The valleys are graded 1st class, 2nd and steerage

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

thanks all - think I will investigate Mottaret.
Although prices for a family of 4 in half-term get scarier every year, so will probably end up getting a lateish Christmas/NY deal again to whatever is available.

simonx, easter is earlier next year - really well worth a look for a family holiday. Prices will be far less than half term, as will the queues. And you have a good chance of some nice weather, which is important with kids.

Of the 3V places I reckon the best balance of price/snow/piste access/facilities is probably Courchevel 1650.
