My brother lives in the states, nope.... Way down south so as trying to organise ski trip with him and thought as we'd both have to fly we may as go somewhere in the middle, Japan!
Any thoughts, experiences and who to book with or should we do independently would be fab.

Niseko / Hirafu is the most westernized resort in Japan.
They get huge volumes of snowfall, but not much sun.

I have been skiing in Hokkaido (Niseko, Rusutsu, Kiroro, Furano) quite a few times.
Personally, I found the ski resorts are too small for my liking. Unless you like deep powder, I don't see the attraction of Niseko at all. On the other hand, if I am after the deep powder, I might as well go to Colorado or Utah which have some of the best powder around and bigger mountain.

I have an opposite view to Crusader, in that I very much enjoy skiing deep powder and have found more than enough to do in just Niseko for 3 weeks of skiing. Can't tell you it's going to be cheap though!

If you want to rail a load of groomers then don't go to Japan! The backcountry opps around Hokkaido are endless...

You're looking at US/Can day ticket lift prices...
Beer is super expensive, whisky less so, go figure! The food is awesome... you'll come back a Ramen addict! You can eat well reasonably or pay a lot more if you want sashimi every night...
Given the way the Euro is at the mo it's not significantly more expensive than say, Switzerland, posher Austrian resorts or France once you're there, but flights/accom will be steeper, which is why I mentioned BDL above as they're prettty reasonable.
If you like powder, easy access sidecountry and trees then don't hesitate... If I wasn't otherwise engaged this winter i'd be back there in a heartbeat.

flog873347, I'd guess prices vary a bit by resort - I'd expect Niseko and Hakuba to be among the most expensive (because they have a reputation that attracts lots of foreign visitors), but I've only been to Niseko so can't say for sure (wait and see what radar pulls out, or pm MagSeven who is based in Hokkaido).
From memory I'd have said accommodation and lift pass were fairly expensive by European standards (even Switzerland), and as oz5000 says food could vary a huge amount depending on where you ate (it was definitely possible to eat well at lunch for about £5, but you could easily pay 4 times that). The main thing that's making Japan expensive at the moment is the exchange rate, though, so there's not much chance of avoiding the expense unfortunately!

flog873347, when are you thinking of going? As well as Hokkaido it is worth considering Honshu (see radar's post for some suggestions, but Hakuba is worth considering amongst others).

Hi all, thanks for all the info and the pics on radar, Post are amazing. Having spent a nice hour or two on the web today, think I'm going to withdraw this post as over budget and for brother in states flying with two kids puts it way out of range for him.....but Japan will be going on the Bucket List just to see those snow trees.
