Just a warning that if you buy the Snowcare insurance on your lift pass in Italy, you are expected to be taken to the clinic by the on-piste first-aiders.
A friend broke her thumb, skied to the trauma clinic, got plastered and ended up paying her own €200 bill.
I think it's fair to say that language problems and ignorance prevented this problem being picked up and corrected in time, but that was the result.
Best to get a free ride in a snowcat.

is that so they can then charge the insurance company another 300 euros for the mountain rescue. Fully understand if injury is serious and casualty should be imobilised, assessed and then removed from the mountain safely, but a broken thumb ffs...
Or possibly it is to stop people claiming on the insurance for other injuries, drink related etc which are not strictly snowsports injuries

RobertC, interesting. I'm not familiar with that insurance but am interested as might do a few days in italy this season. IF she had had a ride in a snowcat, having called the piste rescue, would that lift-pass insurance have paid for the medical treatment? In France the Carte Neige (or Carré Neige) bought with your ski pass only gets you to the clinic. It doesn't pay for the medical treatment AFAIK. That's what your UK travel insurance is for (and before anyone goes on about EHIC, that won't pay if it's a private clinic, either).
the insurance you buy with the lift pass in France is pretty cheap - price of a small beer. Wouldn't expect it to pay medical bills, given that even a minor injury can cost so much.

Yes Pam. If she had called the pronto soccorso, there would have been no problem.
I believe the clinic costs would have been covered fully. (Terms and conditions apply ....)
I suspect the snowcat ride is free anyway. Maybe not the helicopter, not sure but perhaps.
I can't compare this with the price of a small beer in France. In Italy here, btw, it's about €2.50 or two and a half times the price of a coffee or 500ml water.
We are very happy with the mountain services. It was just a warning because our friend fell though the cracks in the system. They sell insurance as an add-on at the ticket desk. It's not obvious what you are buying.

same kind of price here, but French coffee is more expensive than Italian coffee (and generally not so good!!)
I've been aware of a few minor accidents to people I know where it would have been better to call piste assistance than cope bravely alone - for a start, it makes the whole insurance claim process easier. Probably a good idea to let them take over! Useful warning.

Pathetic comments above. I'd expect moderators to cancel accounts that abuse and misquote others.

If you are that thin-skinned, then I'm afraid you are in the wrong place.
It was an obvious joke, of a type which is quite common on here, and would be a very tiny forum if accounts were cancelled for such as that.

Fair enough - An over-reaction, I agree.
But is it acceptable forum etiquette to change the word order inside a quote?

on a slightly different tack: we had a similar but I guess opposite experience early this season. if you ARE skiing in France and have not bought carte neige (I never have but will in future...) then if you can, do walk to the nearest lift station. Our friend broke her arm and got rescued (even though with the very limited snow cover could easily have walked down the hill), and ended up paying EUR320 to get down the hill, and another EUR150 to get to the medical centre (this was in Tignes - Val Claret).
and she did not have UK travel insurance either, so the whole thing ended up costing the best partof EUR1000...

well, in that case, she was really pretty dopey, wasn't she? Even when you are more than willing to buy insurance it's not always easy to work out the optimum way to do it. But not having it at all is

All this rescue stuff throws me, 3 years ago in Val Cenis i had a fall and tore my calf muscle in the middle of a red run in hoofing snow and poor viz. My mate skiid down to one of the lifties, who promptly wizzed up on a skidoo and took me back to the bubble, where i then got the lift down, very friendly, very helpful and no charge.
The following year whilst skiing with my brother-in- law, he did the identical thing, so i skiid off to get help, next thing a full on rescue is in place and they seized his skis till he paid the fee for the rescue. This time the resort was St Sorlin. So on minor injuries i think it is pot luck.
Since my brother in laws fall we always take out the Carte Niege, we also have holiday insurance as well.

No, but I think it's a case of poetic (comedic?) license in reference to the above!
