Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Meribel for Half Term

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
My daughter has recently started work as a teacher, so unfortunately we are locked into skiing once again at half term.

We are planning to drive out, my question to snowheads is, what is the best time on half term Saturday (11th Feb) to pass Chambery ... am I better travelling through Friday night to arrive in Meribel Saturday AM, or sleep the night in Ashford/Folkestone and transit France early on Saturday morning, arriving in Meribel early evening?

If memory serves me right I dont wan't to be on the motorway out of Chambery between 10AM and 4PM.

Any thoughts from Snowheads?

I think that would be my choice. Good luck.... I wouldn't aim to arrive Meribel before 6 pm.

DavidYacht, Go for early morning. After that who knows. Seen a 50 mile tail back through Chambery in the middle of the day it would have taken hours and hours for it to clear. Go for morning.

one problem with an early arrival plan is that if anything goes wrong - even a minor delay - it can land you in the midst of the worst of the traffic. That happened to a niece borrowing our apartment last half term. they had not bargained for a 3 hour delay at Eurotunnel. On another occasion friends spent hours at 40 mph in heavy snow in northern France.

If you build in enough contingency time to cope with such ordinary sort of buggeration factors and then everything goes swimmingly you have hours to wait before the lifts open. wink

Also, of course, accommodation may not be available till relatively late in the day. Typically 3 or 4 pm for French rented accommodation. Which can be fine for well-organised skiers but needs a bit of thinking about in advance, and isn't great with kids.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Having seen Chambery with a 50 mile tailback I would prefer to be waiting for a lift to open

Also last year we assumed that the 1st week of January was off peak as it had been for the last few years but several European countries were still on school holidays so our normal lazy drive through France in the middle of the day was awful. Took over 2 hours extra. IMO aim for early morning or very late evening. If a delay happens then poo-poo happens.
