I've been meaning to post this for a while. How do other Snowheads know each other? I am an only skier in the family and out of my friends. I've tried to get my OH involved, she just isn't interested. I would love to go on one of the Snowheads bashes but I won't know a single person there which out of a group of say 60 who know other members and have family there etc, is rather daunting!!! If I had friends who are skiers, I would have brought them along so I wasn't "on my own" so to speak. The other thing is I dont think I have much in common with the majority of people on here. Yes we all love skiing but that is where I think the similarities would stop. I get the impression that most people on here are rather well off, have their own kit, ski 3 times a year, and are all bloody grea at skiing. So, on the other hand someone who is a rather chubby sod, in a basic job driving a van, rather skint all the time, and who skies once a year would be a spare part so to speak. This thread may be a bit of a shock to some if you but it's just the impression that I get, I could be wrong and I just need to man up a little and book myself into a trip. Were any other Snowheads in my boat early on in their skiing lives?

Ricklovesthepowder, except for the SOPiBs, which do demand a given, quite good, level of skiing, all the bashes I have been to have been suitable for anyone of early intermediate standard (so comfortbale skiing most reds) up. Most sHs couldn't care less what car you drive (I drive a 6-years-old Zafira). Because sHs tend to be enthusiasts, most will have their boots - but many hire skis. As to chubbiness, in self-interest I hope that sHs continue to welcome those of (ahem) ample girth. I've never been aware of someone not finding pals to ski with at a bash. Give it a go.

Ricklovesthepowder, MTFU and book a trip!
When I joined snowheads nearly 5 years ago I booked on the 2007 EoSB. I didn't knwo anyone so took a friend. within 24 hours we were having a ball. 5 years later I have been on several bashes and have had lots of independent trips with the ski buddies I met that year and in others since. I know people from get togethers at Hemel, Castleford, drinks in London - it all culminated this year when I introduced snowheads buddies to my real life amates In fact, ski buddies ARE real life mates now.
My husband does not "do" crowds. He has no interest in bashes (although he did go for half a week once) and he doesn't come out when we meet for drinks, but he does sometimes come to Hemel - he likes the people, he's just not a "joiner". Most people do not come to bashes with family or partners (what goes on tour stays on tour...)
I would say that I know upwards of 100 snowheads and am chuffed everytime I meet more.
Yes lots of people have their own kit, but loads of people don't - I couldn't tell you who has or hasn't - haven't a clue, and who cares?
Yes some folk ski 3 times a year, but quite a few scrimp and save for a week and somehow manage to do a bash as a cheap extra.
Yes some folk are great at skiing, most are passable and continuing to improve, some are almost complete beginners - there's a place for everyone.
If you can't afford a trip you could arrange a Manchester Offline - a p*ss up basically and see how you all get on?

Ricklovesthepowder, speaking for myself I started meeting other snowHeads in fridges (regular events used to get sorted by The Management but these days they leave us to our own devices, check out the Chill Factor thread on Events http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=77158 post a comment and update the poll, I'm sure someone will be along shortly). I've met a few of them and they are reassuringly human (as are the Hemel lot who I see more regularly).
I went on my first bash last year (the EoSB) I was equally nervous about being with a group of complete strangers but, in general, they were a welcoming bunch. One thing I realised pretty quickly is that the people who go to the bashes aren't necessarily the same as the people who post on the forum. There are a huge number of people here only a few of whom post regularly. Not everyone is minted (quite a few aren't), not everyone is an off-piste maestro (very few are). Quite a few go on the bashes because they are cheap. There will be people there who you will have things in common with (other than skiing).
To meet people on the bash I chose to book in to a few lessons which certainly helped with meeting other people who were at roughly the same level as I was. I also choose to share with other people for much the same reason. I also found out who was on the outbound flights with me (everyone is encouraged to post travel details) and PM'd them so I had company on the journey. All of this helped and, so far, I haven't regretted meeting anyone. Prior to this year's PSB one enterprising member went as far as to PM just about everyone and arrange a meeting in London for everyone who was going.
The guide to bashes http://snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=49389 is a bit out of date, but is still pretty accurate. There will be a lot of people in a similar situation.
Hope that helps...

Ricklovesthepowder, I've met many Snowheads on their first bashes who feel the same as you. Invariably that feeling lasts all of 5 minutes once they've met up.

I had similar reservations about joining a Bash - being a lone traveller of 64 and, I had assumed, somewhat older than most other Snowheads and therefore little in common - but took the plunge on the PSB.
At Heathrow and Geneva airports, on the plane, on the coach, in the bar on the first night and after breakfast, I had already 'palled up' with at least 20 Snowheads before we had hit the snow.
With a group of 120+ I was still meeting 'new' people by Friday, but reckon I chatted to and can remember at least half of those in Tignes.
The common theme is skiing and there is certainly no 'job snobism' - I even palled up with a couple of tax inspectors - (sorry Spud9 and Maylee)
I can't make the Birthday or End of Season Bashes, but have next years likely PSB dates pencilled in already.
Go for it - book a Bash - you won't regret it

I should get yourself along to one asap. I went to my first one as a single when I was 40 yrs old on my first week away on my tod since I was 18! I had a whale of a time.
NB. I couldn't even stagger down a green run of any length when I when I went and had never been on a chair lift (or anything bigger than a Poma), I had my own boots just, and had just picked up a deal on a set of skis on SH's so I did take my own gear. My first trip with SH's was on my first visit to a snow dome - MK IIRC when I organised a birthday party just 6 mths previous to that first trip which was the absolutely brilliant 2008 EoSB.

Lizzard, Spot on about us being a bunch of chubby numpties.
Foxy got some flack because he had seemed to give a lot of advice, often technical, and the video he posted was at odds with the image many of us had. I don't think I joined in the kicking. But it taught me that on the Internet you can get a very false impression of who people are and what they can do.
Ricklovesthepowder, it's fun. We are a real mix and not scary at all. A huge range of people and skills from near novices to genuine experts. Not snobby or exclusive. Go for it.

I've been very tempted by a bash too, however, without meaning to offend anyone at all as I dont know anyones age on here, does anyone young-ish go? I've only just left my teenage years and wouldnt want to be the 'baby' of the group!

spiky1013, the average age is older, but on the 4 trips I've been on there's always been people there in their 20s. The PSB in particular that tookplace in November seemed to have quite a few younger people. Youngest I knew the age of for sure was 22. Age really doesn't seem to matter though.

wigan, Dont get me wrong, I dont have a problem with age at all! I've skied with plenty of people over double my age... just wouldnt want to be the youngest one by a long way and feel a bit left out!

Think one of the guys on 6th BB was still a 6th former? 17yo? (could be wrong), and there were certainly others 3x that age. I guess there's been younger than that on bashes?

I went on my first bash on EoSB 2006 when I was 25, on my tod, not knowing what to expect, with much the same presumptions. I couldn't have been more wrong. Like the others who've posted above, I was hooked. I've been on a dozen or so bashes since, made some great mates and skied with postmen, bankers, lorry drivers, ex-soldiers, IT geeks, doctors, nurses, students, rocket scientists, chefs, graphic designers, traffic light engineers, the lardy boys, the gnarly boys, SCHUSS IN BOOTS, old skool ravers, experimental musicians, pole dancers, first weekers to life-long seasonnaires, 15 to 70 odd, anyone you care to mention
