we have a multi-trip planned for early Feb taking in Sunshine, Louise, Kicking Horse and Fernie. From Fernie we need to get back to Calgary to catch an early evening flight. However on the map it looks like a massive dogleg - can anyone give us any advice re expected journey time ( in a 4x4) , routes or anything else which may help, Thanks

it's about four hours by car, the roads are pretty good but it is, as you say,it's a dog leg through the pass. the taxi driver took us up the back road rather than the main road - just checking google maps it was sparwood (home of the biggest truck in the world), crowsnest pass, then up to okotoks and thence to calgary

lbc, Just checked the info I did for our roadtrip over there - just under 4 hrs.
We didnt do the trip in one go in the end as we skied Castle too on the way back. But all the other times I'd worked on were on the plus side so 4 hrs is what I'd aim for. We went via Crowsnest Pass - check the weather there night before -its an easy drive and was boring on the 22, but quick. The roads were clear even though we had good snow all through the trip. Remember not to fill up in Fernie as its expensive but wait until you cross the state line back into Alberta as its cheaper. Going out fill up in Banff before you head to Kicking Horse, again its cheaper as BC tax is was alot more than Alberta

lbc, i've done that journey a few times myself and it's never taken any longer than 4 hours maximum.
Fernie-Sparwood-Crowsnest Pass-Frank-Highway 22-Okotoks-Calgary.
Enjoy your trip.

Done the return trip twice and it took about 3.5 hours in the taxi. However, we weren't held up by snow, despite there being oodles of it.

Thanks all, really interesting... noted Bones had skiied Castle en route tho.Would it be worth cutting our 3 nights in Golden short by a night to ski Castle and shorten the return trip to Calgary? ( Would say we're solid intermediates ( old though..!!), safe on most Canadian/European blacks, more cautious on Canadian double blacks tho... bored by very flat, samey pistes?

Crowsnest pass can close in bad weather so watch out!

I would second checking the weather before you leave. One route takes a bit longer but our bus driver opted to go this way as he said there was way too much snow on the pass.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

We've been a few times, (used to have a condo there) and it's always been around 3 - 3.5 hours. We take the route advised by the locals which sounds the same route as Backcountryboarder, suggests. A very easy drive, we've never had trouble with snow on the roads though.
