Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Prescription Ski Sunglasses

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I've been trying to find somewhere that sells prescription ski sunglasses (not goggles).

I'm currently living abroad and went round a few of the local opticians today but none seem to offer this. A couple of them said that due to the curvature of skiing sunglasses they can't be made to prescription, another one said that my prescriptions was actually too strong (+3.75 / -2.0) and that if my prescription was under 2.0 (in both eyes) then he would have been able to offer me something.

So they ended up offering me these prescription glasses that can clip inside sunglasses. This is a route I would prefer not to go down.

So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with buying prescription ski sunglasses or just any general advice. Thanks in advance.

kumquat_s, Welcome to SH's. It's a terrible thing to say to a newcomer, but in the top LH side of the screen you will find a search function. Pop 'prescription' sunglasses and/or goggles into that and change the option on the lower RH side of the screen to not search just the thread titles, but instead to search all the postings and you will find a huge quantity of useful advice. This is a subject that comes up often and I think you will find lots of suggestions for various products in the search results.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Have you tried a Maui Jim supplier? They do their own brand of prescription, polarised lenses in their frames and have the option of digitally surfaced lenses which help to eliminate peripheral distortions. Your prescription may be just within their upper limits ( or your optician may be able to tweak your prescription slightly, I have a feeling they go up to +3.50 ). Your prescription is difficult, but not impossible with high base curve frames. The problem is if you use "standard" lenses in a wrapped frame, you induce lots of distortion in the periphery of the lenses. You are best finding an optician who has a lens supplier that specialises in high base curve lenses that compensate for the curvature of the frame. That way you won't get the wobbly feeling you sometimes get with prescription sunglasses. They will probably cost more than standard lenses, but they do make a huge difference to your vision. The way the frame fits is also very important, you can't have a lens that is too big as your eyes need to be pretty well centred within the lens in order to ensure the optical centre of the lens is fitted in front of your pupil. So don't buy anything off the Internet, you need to try them on to ensure they fit.
