And are they still the best way of protecting yourself in case of an avalanche? We are a family of 4, don't go off piste and always ski in the French Alps. I still have a chip I bought years and years ago somchances are it doesn't work now anyway. Should we buy new ones? Or something else maybe? Thanks.

Obviously A snowHead isn't a real person

Well, hate to say it but they're only really good for finding bodies. Transceivers are better in terms of rescue, but if you're just staying on piste I really wouldn't worry about it. Your chances of being caught in an avalanche are miniscule.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

Ah OK. Thanks for that. One less thing to worry about.

The chip is totally passive, and will probbaly still work as there's not anything in them to NOT work.
The Recco search device is about the size of a suitcase, and isn't easily transported nor is it that cheap, so a resort may have a handful of them but not every pisteur will carry one. As a result, they aren't any real use for finding anything but body recovery, as Whitters said, as you have about 15 minutes at most if you're buried and that's just not long enough for the pisteurs to be alerted and get a Recco search device up and operational.
Transceivers are the best bet for being found, but they rely on you and your group knowing how to use them, and carrying out the recovery yourselves.
That being said, if you're only on piste, the chances of getting caught are incredibly slim, very rare.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Whilst that was true of the earlier equipment, according to the Recco website the current generation device is about the size of a large book, held in one hand and weighs less than 1 kg.
