Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Daleboots

Anyone tried or owned a pair of Daleboots ( http://www.daleboot.com/root.html ) and what do you think?
They do have a dealer in Oxfordshire.

Crusader, as a general ski boot it is a bit over the top, but for specific problems it works very very well, i refer a few people each season over to James to get a pair, sometimes the problems they have just cannot be sorted in a regular alpine ski boot, the custom Daleboot works well for people like this

i still struggle with the look, but the function is pretty dam good

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

I had a pair of these for the best part of 20 years which included working a couple of seasons in NZ in the 80s.

They were the best boots I have ever owned once I had shimmied and shaved the liners and padded out the shells in the right places. The Oxfordshire dealer will now do that for you I believe. It's worth it. They were the lightest boot around then (apart from Scott which kept breaking apart). I suspect that may not be the case now. And they fitted and felt like slippers all day long but delivered support when required.

For various reasons way too boring to recount here, I no longer have them but in an ideal world I would buy a new pair like a shot. Had I been thinking a little clearer last season when I refurbed my plus-ten-year-old Salomons at Profeet, I would have bought Daleboot instead (this is no reflection on the excellent Profeet service with which I am fully satisfied).

I spoke to the UK dealer last year on another matter and we ended up discussing DBs and I think he mentioned some sort of lifetime - or at least very long - guarantee.

Stand to be corrected but I think the liner principle is very similar to the Full Tilt boot. DBs had a very futuristic look way back then and I still think it rocks now - to each his own though.

Only negative was being refused hire skis in the US one time because DB wasn't on their insurer's approved list but I would guess that list is a long one.

There's quite a discussion on Daleboots here - it's worth a read.

Hi _ I got a pair of Daleboots last year and they are amazing! admittedly I have 'problems' - completely different size feet (after major surgery on one), legs are different lengths and rotated pelvis. My podiatrist recommended James in Abingdon (the sole fitter in the UK). Despite my problems he was sure he could help - and he has. He took loads of measurements, then I went back when the boots arrived for the fitting. I then tried them on a dry slope for a few hours and went back to James to get a slight adjustment made. I skied 30 days on them last season in perfect comfort and have done a week so far this - same. They are not only a delight to put on, they are as comfortable at the end of the day as at the start. But more importantly for me after 40+ years of skiing I can finally 'feel' my skis - as a result I even ski better (never mind being comfortable). Both my husband and son who have no significant 'feet' problems are going to get Daleboots next time they buy boots. OK they don't look pretty but at the end of the day to be both comfortable and feeling my skis/the snow are far more important. and James is just wonderful - very patient, explains everything and honest about what he can/can't do. He also liaised directly with my podiatrist to understand my problems.

I'd get them to go and see CEM first as they are very likely to get just as good a fit in 'normal' boots if their feet are fairly normal.

Regarding uktrailmonster's reply to a part of my post: "I'd get them to go and see CEM first as they are very likely to get just as good a fit in 'normal' boots if their feet are fairly normal."
in fact that is where my husband went and yet his boots still aren't comfortable all day despite 2 or 3 adjustments. So I do think Daleboots are something special.

i cannot comment on the quality, fit, comfort or ability to improve ones performance on the slopes, but in my view they are some very strange looking boots. Love my Atomics fitted by CEM, feel like slippers but allow me to ski so much better i canwear them all day with no issues at all.

carolh, on the upside at least you have been able to go back and get adjustments, something i guess you wouldnt get at some of the other major outlets, hope he gets them sorted.

and if is not happy he could get in contact, never a problem to do a little more adjustment

the Daleboot has a custom liner in it, a similar liner costs around £140 and will resolve lots of little niggles in a conventional boot for most people.... as i said at the beginning of the thread the Daleboot is great for the right foot but not required for all, and not even for many strange feet, problem is as a boot fitter if you suggest a £140 liner many people don't want to know

the liner is the single biggest problem (other than fitness and technique) with fitting boots, they can be short, narrow, lumpy, have seams in the wrong places etc etc

Hi Carol and Merry Xmas everyone!

I am thrilled to hear that you are so happy with your boots. It was a great pleasure to help make you enjoy your skiing a little bit more Little Angel . Make some turns for me as I still have yet to see any of the fluffy white stuff yet this season.... Sad

Would just like to say that in my opinion the reason the Daleboot solution is such a unique product is the fact that they offer factory lasted modifications (there is possibly only one other manufacturer that could lay claim to this)....This means that even when you have difficult anatomical anomolies to deal with the boots can be manipulated to accomodate each athlete in the factory on the original last. This is a lengthy process taking on average six hours a pair and involves mulitple processes to achieve the best prosthetic shape, and liner selection prior to delivery.

I have been fitting boots for a couple of years now and it still astonishes me to witness the quality and in some cases extend of the mods they produce. They are truly devoted to the cause and the boot is highly adaptable for many foot and skier types. Beyond this it skis AMAZINGLY well and due to its hybrid cabrio design maintains last integrity throughout the stresses of skiing. Further more it is the ONLY boot on the market that offers interchangable canted sole units at the point of sale. In 1991 Warren Witherall predicted that; in 1995 when Daleboots international patent on interchangable sole units expired that the large boot makers would en mass adopt a similar approach to this critical component to stance alignment. To this date not a single one has.....dissapointing really.

The point CEM makes about the liners is absolutley 100% bang on the money! Stock liners are a major weak point the majority of the time! A fact that I know he and I both discuss in detail with our clients as it is a key tool in our ability to deliver the best bootfits (after all this is our only goal). Once apon a time the delivery of the most adjustable and comprehensive boot fitting solutions was the gaol of all boot manufacturers now in many cases it is left upto guys like CEM (one of the very best) to maniplutaed, plane, router, and grind to find the best fit. This ladies and gentleman is the heart and soul of boot fitting and the reason I Love my job!

Merry Xmas to all and to all a powder filled New Year snowHead !!!
