Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Les Deux Alpes - Fly/Drive from Geneva

Hello snowheads, this is my first post on Snowheads, although I've been reading the boards for over 2 years now. I'm looking for some general advice in relation to transfers/car hire from Geneva to LDA.

A group of 8 of us are flying out to Geneva from Belfast on the 28th Jan, (£70 return flights on Easyjet so could'nt miss out) and we're thinking of going to LDA (cheap accomodation and lift-pass through Ski.Sunweb). The question is, what would be the cheapest and most efficient way of getting to LDA, car hire or transfer,(cheapest private transfer price I've seen is in excess of £1,200)?

Also what is the journey like? None of us have driven on the wrong side of the road before never mind in snowy/icey conditions.

Also in terms of car hire does it matter which side of Geneva airport we would rent the car from? I've heard something about Snow tyres being mandatory on one side and not in the other etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated Happy

If you're hiring a car, I'd recommend you ask for it to have snow tyres whether they're mandatory or not. They will make your life much easier if it snows, especially if you have no experience of winter driving.

Public transport option is train to Geneva (10 mins from airport), further train to Grenoble and then bus to 2Alpes. This is easy to do, though the times may be awkward especially if you don't have an early flight.

I think car hire will offer you the best value in terms of price vs convenience. Journey is more or les motorway to Grenoble then N roads (ie A road equivalent) to 2Alpes. DO NOT do what your satnav tells you and go up the D211 to resort. Follow the main road.

If you've got a car you can also take advantage of your free ski day in Serre Chevalier, which is well worth doing.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

freeheelskier, I have the impression they've already booked the flights. Besides, it's not that easy to get from Belfast to anywhere. Laughing

I did the drive last year, roads are pretty good. Think you need to leave plenty of time to drive back, traffic was pretty thick ont he other side of the road as I was heading up Saturday morning (drove back Monday) Make sure not to drive through the centre of Grenoble as I did Smile

debtors, Firstly, its not the wrong side of the road when in France wink Seriously, you will find a l/hand drive easy to get used to....just be careful at junctions and islands! Its an easy drive, mostly A roads till after Grenoble.Couple of things. You will find, when you exit Geneva airport, that you get on the A road pretty quickly. However, when you return, its a longer journey as you go around the airport to car return.Fill the tank when close to Geneva but, unless its changed, still in France(its cheaper,or was?)Use a satnav but,as Lizzard rightly says, follow the main(big)road up to LDA.Dont turn up the goat track Shocked On the way in to LDA,you will see Bourg D'Oisans.Big supermarket and fuel at the second island...much cheaper than in resort.Do some route/map research prior to trip to get route in your mind.In truth, its all pretty straightforward and any decent satnav will see you right.Car hire will be much cheaper, and will also give you greater freedom to explore(Serre Che and La Grave)Have fun and dont worry about the driving....its easy Cool

snowskisnow, shopping is vastly cheaper in LeClerc at Espace Comboire or Carrefour Market in Vizille, both of them on the way. Casino in Bourg d'Oisans has a deserved reputation for being expensive.

So if you're just off somewhere snowy come back and post a snow report of your own and we'll all love you very much

Lizzard, I agree,on the principle there's always somewhere cheaper wink I mentioned Bourg simply because its easy to spot, and way cheaper than up on the hill.I also had in mind a nervous, first time driver Confused

 You know it makes sense.

snowskisnow, it's certainly easy to get to from the main road. It's not actually much cheaper than Marché U these days though, robbing barstids - the main advantage of stopping there on the way is more choice and smaller queues.

Pretty much the same as everywhere in France these days Sad Was in the Marne back in August...the local Carrefour was eye wateringly expensive.Smallish town, captive shoppers? My wife reckoned it was,at least,as expensive as the UK,many items more so.She couldn't even find any decent wine offers ....and she can usually sniff those out Shocked The reasons are complex but,IMHO,France is rapidly losing its 'value for money' attraction to the traveller.
Of course, this never applied to the mountains....where legalised mugging is an accepted business practise wink

Thread drift Embarassed LDA still remains a good choice in these snow challenged times.
