Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

snow socks classed as legal requirement or is it a must for snow chains need help

hi guys as the title says, can we just purchase snow socks or do you have to have snow chains, i know chains are classed a legal requirement for driving to the alps, but are snow socks? basically i have been told that snow chains scratch alloy wheels so would prefer to use socks if this is the case, but if you cant just have socks then i will have to just buy both, what are your thoughts on this matter? please reply asap kind regards sam

In France and Switzerland it is a legal requirement to carry snow chains in your car (you cannot have socks instead) I guess you can have both, if you want to get really good chains that tighten as you go along, which would be better for alloy wheels, try Weissenfels 'Clack and Go' they are much easier to put on too!

See extract from Autosock's website noted below. We used these in the alps and at home last year with fantastic success, with regards to the legality in alpine regions outside France I cant comment though.

Since 2010 AutoSock is certified to comply with the French winter equipment regulations and can be used in France where the snowchain sign (B26) is in place. AutoSock are the only snow socks that have been tested and approved to be used in France as an equivalent snow chain product. You will need to make sure you have the correct sticker if you are going to be using AutoSock in France.
