Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!
Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Slightly random one... has anyone tried to run these on a Mac? The IGN website says they work on various flavours of Microsoft operating system but doesn't say anything about Macs.

I have both Carto Explorer and IGN Rando (by Loxane). Neither work with Mactintosh. The maps, which are basically scans, are stored in a propriatory format. Someone cracked this for CartoExplorer but prompty got sued by the company for publishing the information - there was even a Carto to .jpeg conversion tool. Carto, a separate company from the IGN, hold the digital rights to IGN maps. They take their copyright very seriously and are not afraid to start legal action against anyone infringing their rights. Fair enough.
The IGN Rando maps are slightly worse quality than Carto but about 1/4 the price. Unfortunately the IGN - which is one of these big French private public partnerships - has fallen out with Loxane so it is doubtful that there will be any more in the series - for skiers a lot of the Pyrenees and Southern Alps is missing.
The IGN... what can I say? They could learn a great deal from the Ordanance Survey on how to make maps. They have only recently introduced a usable grid system on their maps (thanks to GPS) and there are a lot of errors, at least on the paper maps I have. How can a footpath start in the middle of nowhere and then stop? Oh, that is what their plane flyng at 50,000 meters showed. Apparently they have also removed paths from maps under pressure from landowners who didn't like walkers crossing their land. An OS 1:50,000 scale map is more usable than an IGN 1:25000 series map in my opinion.

I've always found the IGN (paper) maps usable but, as you say, not in the same league as OS or Swiss maps. Also, most of the places I am interested in seem to be on joins - but that seems to be the case wherever I go
