For shoes can't see how they'll hurt for icy pavements etc. Doubt their efficiency for real winter hiking and probably won't fit ski boots however.

Well, the person's real but it's just a made up name, see?

yea, I was just thinking of normal shoes/boots. They small enough to keep in a bag and if you start getting to icy areas, quick to put on.
When I was in Kiruna last year, I hurt my back in a sledding accident and had a couple of times where I would have a little slip on the way into town (not fall down - able to catch myself) but that hurt a hell of a lot. I wish I had something to stop those little slips then.

If I lived in a place where I knew they would get used every winter, I would try those £40 ones. For what I do, I'll probably try save the money

Yes probably best to see if the ones you have work well on ice (get yourself down the loal ice rink ) - if not 40 quid to help prevent another back injury looks like a good investment to me.

'slip on crampons' has a Ratner-esque ..er.. ring to it

AlanB1976, well I do the slip on spikes ones as well, we tried them out last season and they were pretty good especially on the walk back from the bar in resort! They are a good cheap alternative for UK use, in resort, they work best on ice and are better than normal boots on snow.
Good for seasonnaires on a budget!!!!
The thing to remember is that if your shoe or boot flexes when you walk you will only be using the front spikes or the back spikes, if you are putting on over large boots get a larger size? than normal show size.
I know Amazon sold 1,000s of them last year they have been nagging me to go on there, but with their fees etc its just not worth it

AlanB1976, that picture looks exactly like ones we've bought locally in France for a lot more money. They're very reassuring on icy/snowy pavements (where I feel much more nervous than I do on a piste). they're just for shoes/walking boots.
