Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better!

When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Prompted by the style question - why is A -framing bad?
Assuming that it is bad in certain uses (and I think it is) is it always bad or is it just sometimes an output of biomechanics when the skis, the important things, are actually doing the right thing?

It's not. Well most of the time it's not. Let's just say it's a phase some people go through. Some people come out of this phase quicker than others (some people never do).
But it's a good indication of a few other slight problems that could hinder progression.
The very basics are that you should try and be symmetrical, Hips, Knees, Ankles, Base of skis. An A frame just shows that you ain't and gives an indication of other things to work on. And, as you're a bit "bent" you could be in a stronger/studier possition
eg. a few drills - use your hands to push your knees out of the frame if you find yourself doing, try sliding the outer leg back and forwards and you turn (this'll force you to pressure the inner leg and so, for most people, this will get rid of the A. If you're up to it White Pass or Charlestons will sometimes work on getting you onto the inner ski. But do0n't forget there are loads of people who are good at drill but not so fluid skiers. It takes just as long (if not longer) to "forget the drill and keep the skill" than it does to learn the drill in the 1st place.
Say you have just learned to snowplough and now you’re starting the run the ski in parallel. Many people will try and steer using the outside leg and just forget the inner leg is even three. So in this case the A frame is the outer leg coming towards the inner and creating the A.
There's other people who are not really out of the plough yet (well the inner ski isn't anyway) and so the inner knee is moved into a plough whilst the outer leg moves over the central point and extends.
