I'm trying to put together a trip for January 8th - 15th and having a major headache about location.
Our major requirements are:
- APARTMENT for the four of us so we can self cater for breakfast.
- Nice cruisey, wide, long French Blue/Italian Red type slopes.
- Pretty town, not some purpose built concrete jungle.
- Not eye-wateringly expensive. I don't wanna pay £8 for a beer.
- Trees. Missed skiing in the trees when in Val Thorens last year!
I skiied Courmayer for 2 days last year on trips to Chamonix and loved it. It was dead, the runs were wide and the whole place was pretty beautiful. Whilst quite limited for my level, it was perfect for the others and this particular trip is about the group not about me going off alone.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
I'm open to France/Italy/Austria. (Not Cham, Courmayer or VT)

Check out Canazei, Val di Fassa in the Dolomites. Ticks all your boxes, not sure about the self catering. The Montafon in Austria is also good, not too much self catering (try Interhome) but lots of cheap B+B.

Quite close to Cockerhoop, I reckon you wouldn't go too far wrong with Serre Chevalier.

Schladming in Austria or Selva in Italy would fit your criteria .

Champagny en Vanoise in La Plagne / Paradiski would also fit your criteria. It is a lovely, unspoilt village but with easy access to the La Plagne / Paradiski ski area.
There are a couple of tree lined runs back into the village but both are tricky in parts. There are easier tree lined runs into Montalbert and Montchavin / Les Coches which are easily accessible if you have the La Plagne lift pass.
The resort and ski area will be pretty quiet when you plan to go, most accommodation is at low season prices for that week. Le Pitchou bar in the village centre was one of the cheapest places to drink in the area last season, they also had a happy 2 hours between 6 and 8pm.

We are 6 blokes on our fourth year in this resort, travelling the week after. We like the great cruising skiing, Sella Ronda and great value. People are great, lots of Danish go there and they are a good crack. Apres is good and later night life, albeit not manic is is there if you know where to look. We have found staying in a chalet better for us. Town is pretty and has character.

Problem I'm encountering with the Dolomites is the packages are so much more expensive for that same week than trips to anywhere in France. Looking at a good £200 more per person.
Which is pretty devastating as having looked into the region now it looks fantastic!!

If there's one cruisey area that qualifies for "must ski before you die" status it has to be the Alta Badia. The scenery, piste grooming and food are memorable and if you are lucky enough to have sunshine all week you'll think you already have died...However you'd probably need to do it DIY as the best bases of Corvara and San Cassiano don't seem to feature in TO brochures (see elsewhere on this forum for info on airport transfers to the Dolomites)
Madonna di Campiglio isn't in the same league but has particularly beautiful treelined runs and some steeper stuff too if you get bored.
Haven't been to either yet but Serfaus and Serre Chevalier are also high on my wish list of cruisey resorts.
