Mail for help.Help!!

Log in to snowHeads to make it MUCH better! Registration's totally free, of course, and makes snowHeads easier to use and to understand, gives better searching, filtering etc. as well as access to 'members only' forums, discounts and deals that U don't even know exist as a 'guest' user. (btw. 50,000+ snowHeads already know all this, making snowHeads the biggest, most active community of snow-heads in the UK, so you'll be in good company)..... When you register, you get our free weekly(-ish) snow report by email. It's rather good and not made up by tourist offices (or people that love the tourist office and want to marry it either)... We don't share your email address with anyone and we never send out any of those cheesy 'message from our partners' emails either. Anyway, snowHeads really is MUCH better when you're logged in - not least because you get to post your own messages complaining about things that annoy you like perhaps this banner which, incidentally, disappears when you log in :-)

Basi shadowing

 Poster: A snowHead
Poster: A snowHead
I have recently completed my alpine level 1 course with BASI and now have to do my 35 hours shadowing. The closest dryslope to me is Snowtrax where I used to work as a club instructor. So it seems odd that I should now have to shadow people doing a job that I have already done as most of the instructors there only have there SSE club instructor. BASI have told me that any previous shadowing I have done doesn't count. So is shadowing the SSE club instructors something I will just have to do again or will it not count for BASI?

Marvel, hm, interesting one. I shall ask. I expect the answer will be that it would count (even teaching, rather than shadowing there, would probably count), as the shadowing does not have to be shadowing as such but ski school experience. However, from a personal development POV, I would strongly suggest that you try to find an instructor with at least BASI L2 if possible who you can shadow.

I'll get back to you with the official answer!

Hi Marvel, I now have the official response:

The shadowing does have to come after L1. You can however gain ski school experience e.g. in the bookings office, ski hire, slope maintenance.

It would be good if the 35hrs are actual teaching experience and not shadowing so there is another opportunity to make some money and gain experience too.

Even shadowing a coach of lesser ability will be useful perhaps only from the point of view of “well I wouldn’t do it that way”. Watching and absorbing any form of teaching will be a useful learning tool when used appropriately.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Ok, thanks for the info. Looks like I still need to do the shadowing. I'm hoping to do most of it during the family Christmas holiday in Les Arcs.

Marvel, are you going to get in touch with NewGen in Vallandry for your shadowing hours? I did some of my shadowing hours with them a few years ago.
