looking to book some cheap flights for an early season 3 nighter around the 8 December and was wondering where to go so early in the season? We will be 3 couples of which one of the girls does not ski.
Flights are very cheap to Zurich at the moment but the Chf is poor value however there are good options from there.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

In Switzerland I've done Laax (probably too early) and Zermatt from there. In February I went to St Anton from Zurich, it ought to be OK in December.

If there is good early snow your options for places to go obviously increase, but then again you won't know that in advance. At that time of year in Austria I'd be looking at Ischgl, Obertauern or Hintertux. So worth having a look at flights to Innsbruck, Salzburg and Munich. Keep in mind for St Anton that at that time of year a lot of the lift system will still be closed..

So do you think it would be too early for Swiss resorts near to Zurich, i.e. Engelberg?

Stubai would also be a good option for Austria. If the snow turns out to be good it's close enough to Ischgl/St Anton for you to change your mind about where exactly to base yourself at the last minute.

northantsred, one of the best places for snow might be Tignes, but Tignes out of season would be a pretty miserable choice for a non-skier.

Might be worth looking at Kaprun. Decent glacier and a nice village and Zell Am See nearby.

Did short break to Obergurgl at that time last year. Plenty of snow and 85% of lifts open other than during an afternoon blizzard. Nice spa hotels for non-skiiers but not alot else to do in the village

wherever you decide to go, I'd not book accommodation till the last minute; keep your options open and see where it's snowing.

northantsred, definitely look at Soelden - 2 glaciers and at least the Giggijoch system will be open which gets you from the village to both glaciers. If the snow is good then the whole system may be open. it was at athat time in 2009.

northantsred, Engelberg and Andermatt have a decent chance of being open. Both are pretty easy from Zurich and accommodation can be had for not-completely-eyewatering amounts.
I had a great couple of powder days in Andermatt during the early season last year. Thought it was all set up for a bumper season... how wrong can you be?

Luton to Geneva is still only about 50 quid before baggage - aim there and the world is your oyster. You might get a lower closer resort if the season starts early but you will always have a banker in the E-K. There will be buckets of accom for that time - and most small operators will negotiate short breaks.

Thanks everyone for your input and thoughts.
We had a meet up last night and in light of the poor value from the CHf we have decided to give a miss to Switzerland and buy flights to Geneva with a view to visiting a cheaper French resort(never ever thought I would ever say that!) and wait until nearer the time and hope that there is some good early season dumpage.
If not then we can always have a weekend in Annency or some other equally nice town/city and just relax and consume. . . .

few French resorts will be reliably open on 9 December. Tignes would be the obvious high altitude French destination from Geneva - around 2.5/3 hours. Not particularly cheap, though you should get some good deals that early in the season.

I realise that we are ahead of general resort openings but some will be offering partial opening on weekends if the snow god has smiled. I was in Tignes for a week last year and I am hoping to hit somewhere a little closer to Geneva, maybe La Clusaz or Megeve possibly but as I mentioned earlier, it would be good to ski but we will still have fun even if there is no snow .

This was a tongue in cheek remark given the current rate of exchange for the CHf, which will make all French resorts appear cheaper when compared to costs for Swiss resorts currently.
