New Zealand's scratchy ski season awaits big boost from Australia

A weather system which has brought the heaviest - and lowest-altitude - snowfalls to parts of Australia for 20 years is heading for the New Zealand ski fields. Up to 50cm of new snow is predicted for the south island, which would bring a much-needed boost to the NZ mountains. The first half of the 2005 NZ ski season has not been great.

Forecaster Bob McDavitt says cold air from the Tasman Sea will reach the South Island on Friday and Saturday, followed by a southerly on Sunday.

He says up to 50 centimetres of snow is expected down to 400 metres around Dunedin and down to 500 metres on Banks Peninsula.
