Poster: A snowHead

Family of 4 - 2 intermediate adults who haven't been skiing for a while; 10 year old with one week under her belt; 8 year old beginner.
Mid-January (we are allowed to take the kids out of school - result....)
Reasonable snow record
School with reasonable English for kids (I think my wife means "not ESF")
Cheers

false dichotomy. There are plenty of self catering packages.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Probably self catering (fuss pot kid). Budget - more than I thought it would be! Max of £800-1000 per person with skis/skool/passes (not inc beer money)

Arrange you own flights (should be easy in Jan) and try Niederau in Austria - plenty of local skiing for beginners/low intermediates and access to other areas only a short ride away. Staffler Hotel is run by brits and very affordable.... http://www.stafflerhotel.com/winter.htm: 300€ per week (adults), 250€ for children half board.

Sorry I disagree. Niederau is a great place but very limited skiing for low intermediates.

For that budget you could do one of Crystal's + holidays where everything is included. Why have the hassle of arranging flights, transfers, accommodation, etc when for that £ someone will do it all for you ! Pick a hotel with a swimming pool and your kids will be in 7th heaven.
Resorts to consider with your groups' abilities :
La Plagne,
Alpe d'Huez
Meribel
Les Menuires
La Tania
Avoriaz
Most have now got 'English' ski schools rather than ESF only. La Plagne's schools are particularly well regarded.

And love to help out and answer questions and of course, read each other's snow reports.

Thanks, all. Alpe D'Huez looks good - lots of easy runs round a bowl and quite high. I quite like the look of the bowl - nowhere for kids to fly off in the wrong direction. We went to LDA a few years ago and we (the parents) had kittens when daughter was using the little green/blue path (with a rather large drop to one side) to get to one of the lifts. Friend took his first-time family to Alpe D'Huez and they enjoyed it. The Mrs would like Avoriaz (no traffic). all of the french resorts mentioned look suitable. The town of Niederau looks very nice (complete antithesis of a French resort), but skiing looks a bit limited, especially if us crumbly old adults don't fancy the reds (no idea how they compare to French reds).
We'll probably hold off booking till later (given that we are going in low season) and see what the snow looks like and what sort of deals we can get.

Look at the piste map, there are blue nursery slopes, a couple of blues up the hill then after that a lot of reds that aren't terribly easy (as I know to my cost).
