it's not a good sign of things to come, has no relevance to things to come. Always fun to see - but then it was snowing some weeks ago, quite a lot. Funny old year.

Same thing in Serfaus.
Of course it doesn't mean a thing, but can't help but feel that little tingle of childish excitement.

and then probably not, there were non glaciated resorts operating in Europe in October last year.
BTW we've had snow in July and August this year, quite a bit at the end of July. This is just the continuation of the poor summer weather.

Indeed, Planai was I think operating on 23 October last year.
September snow is certainly not that rare. Looks rather heavier and lower than I can remember it in Austria.
Lovely as it looks though it is irrelevant to the coming season.

that has made my Monday before its even fully underway - scouting the webcams and grinning broadly. I have a good feeling about winter in general this year but don't ask why!

Looks like about 30 cmms in Soll and in the Hoff. Can't help but get excited, no matter how quickly it melts.

Cool, some snow on Grand Montets. Actually, that's almost more snow on the face than I saw at the end of last season and people were still skiing that!

!! never seen a better reason not to go there
if you tried to design a more ugly resort you would have trouble.

There is, and it is called 'Les Menuires' (although to be fair it's improved a bit of late....as has Avoriaz).

nixmap, Whitters, Avoriaz is Ugly? Are you having a laugh? I has no cars and transport is on horse drawn carriages, its situated on top of a 600m cliff and lovely peaks all around. In the summer its not the best place to look at, but in winter its fine. Its designed to look like rocks from a distance and to blend into the landscape.

Going off piste here a bit are we not? Most French resorts possess the beauty only a mother could love.

Dantercepies is running, odd. Summer season over. Maybe to do with the crane at top?

Ricklovesthepowder, it was more a comment on the especially ugly Les Menuires. I'm a regular visitor to Avoriaz, and will be there on opening day, snow permitting. The setting on top of the cliff is quite dramatic from a certain angle. However, it is no Zermatt, and a lot of the older blocks look like they have tiny rooms.

that comment suggests you've not been to "most French resorts", mcspreader. In fact, I bet you've not been to more than a handful.
I hope the weather cheers up soon - I plan to spend my usual 3 - 4 weeks gentle walking, reading and lolling around in the Alps in October, and we usually have plenty of sunshine.

This cam at 3,200 metres looking down into Vallons de La Meije with the snowless southerly aspects of the Ecrins and the Vanoise in the background is making last Sunday's little flirt with winter seem like a distant memory now ...
