Poster: A snowHead
|
After filming my skiing on a Panasonic Lumix TZ10 last year (very good quality but had to hold it while skiing, which took the fun away), I am after a handsfree HD camcorder. Been looking at the Go Pros & Drift Innovations Stealth (both around £250 mark) or the Muvi HD-10 (around £150)
Not sure which one to get. All offer 1080p filming, but just wandering if any1 has any of them (not really bothered about the cheaper Muvis or the v cheap ebay copies) Want good quality filming. The Stealth and Muvi Gumball 3000 offer Slow motion, which could be good (instead of just slowing the finished film down in Sony video editor) Please could anyone offer advice on the above. A few reports say the Drift is better than the Go pro.
thanks (cant wait for skiing hol this year, well early next year_...think I am starting to prefer them to beach hols!

Lots of of my kayaking mates have the GoPro, and it seems ace. I'm gonna get one in September, will hopefully be good for skiing too. The 3D version looks pretty interesting too.

Aren't all camcorders handsfree if you stick them on a suitable mount??

We've got a go pro at work, prety foolproof, and you can buy various cases and filters and mounts for various applications/sports. what it doesn't do is make your films interesting.

Anyway, snowHeads is much more fun if you do.

Jon Ford,
Can only give feedback for the GoPro- I Took one away on my last Ski trip.
Upside- Sharp punchy smooth video quality, stable recording, no wind noise (probably not going fast enough lol!) loads of mounting options, solid no frills build quality. I Did loads of comparisons before buying and to me the Gopro appeared to give better detail than most (I was only comparing snowy footage though)
Lessons learnt- Fogging issues in the afternoon as temps rise & when recording for long periods as the camera gets quite warm (buy the optional anti fogging pads), I placed a small piece of tissue inside the case as an emergency measure. I filmed a mixture of 25 fps & 50 fps @720, in future I would film everything @ 50 fps 720 as most of the footage I ended up slowing down.
Afterthoughts -to buy a super fast computer and to benefit from the full HD quality, buy a blue ray burner & player.

Jon Ford,
On a Mountain Biking forum I am on people are favouring the Drift over the Go Pro and the Contour. I've seen the results on You Tube and they are excellent.
I'm tempted to get one too. The Go Pro looks too bulky IMHO.

Think the Drift is a lot bulkier than most people would probably imagine, but it's the mount that can make Go Pro look bulky. And the Go Pro sound quality beats all of the others by orders of magnitude, to the extent that there is sound rather than just wind noise. There's a handful of unboxing and comparison vids on youtube. Conveniently they are all in bright sunlight, so don't test the capabilities going into and out of trees (some take ages to adjust to light levels). That's just my experience of viewing, and trying to decide what or whether to buy.

After tweaking the exposure settings etc on my Contour HD I'm pretty impressed by the quality. It's the 720p version but crisp is not the word for the footage. IIRC they've now got a 1080p one with GPS built it and they have a plethora of options for mounting it.

Lots cheaper in the US from a brief look I did, ie http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250833965421&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT works out at £118, it's the shipping etc that ramps it up.
I'll be looking at getting a Contour + when I am over there, so you can use your mobile phone on the hill as a viewing screen to get it all lined up correctly...

Go Pro seems to be the default ski camera over in the US even if users do look like teletubbies. Check unofficial networks for lots of GoPro edits along with TGR.
